Transgender Surgery Isn't the Solution
By PAUL MCHUGH
Posted: Jun 12, 2014 @ 7:19 PM

OPINION — At the heart of the problem is confusion over the nature of the transgendered. "Sex change" is biologically impossible. People who undergo sex-reassignment surgery do not change from men to women or vice versa.

Caution when reading this because of the strong nature of the opinion, which is primarily based on biological facts.

[EDIT] For some odd reason, it got censored though I had access to the text before.
Here's the entire story: http://pastebin.com/b1Sa8rE9

I would have like to have read that, but from the link given, it seems I need to subscribe to the WSJ for that to happen. *shudders*

There is a link to the google banked full article floating around somewhere here on the forums.

Huh, I was able to look at the whole thing in that link at first glance when I was posting this. Hmm.
Well, I've added a PasteBin link in the original post since I'm still on the page with the entire story.

Paul McHugh again? Seriously? Why the hell are newspapers so damned quick to publish this bigot's opinions to cause a debate where there is none, and let people keep de-humanizing trans people?

Here's a quote from a rebuttal about who this guy is: (from the article "Lies, Damned Lies, and Lies about Transgender People")

""Dr. Paul McHugh, retired from psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Hospital..."

Yes, let's talk about Dr. Paul McHugh.

He's an octogenarian, self-described orthodox Catholic whose anti-LGBT bias is well documented. He spent years defending the Catholic Church from sexual abuse allegations. In his role as part of the USCCB's Review Board, McHugh pushed the idea that the Catholic sex abuse scandal was not about pedophilia but about "homosexual predation on American Catholic youth."

McHugh refers to homosexuality as "erroneous desire," filed an amicus brief arguing in favor of Proposition 8 and making the erroneous claim that homosexuality is a "choice." Additionally, McHugh defended forcing a pregnant ten-year-old girl who'd been raped by an adult relative to carry the pregnancy to term. He describes post-surgical transgender women as "caricatures of women."

If you want a detailed analysis of how Dr. McHugh has misrepresented data, rigged studies, left out significant details in his research, and is nothing more than a poorly-regarded fringe element in his own field, you can read about it here, here, here, here, here, and here. No secular medical or mental health organization agrees with him, because every other available study shows that access to health care improves outcomes for transgender patients.

Even McHugh's own (former) academic department denounced his anti-trans stance in testimony before the Maryland Senate this past year, stating that they follow the WPATH Standards of Care. Court cases looking at transgender medical issues have consistently found his work unpersuasive.

In short, Paul McHugh is the Mark Regnerus of transgender issues."

It is a bit sad. Once upon a time the WSJ was a source of solid financial reporting and though socially conservative, not bigoted.  It has evolved into another mouthpiece for the ill educated, ill mannered, and ill informed.  Why it continues to have credibility is beyond me.  Sigh

QuoteAt the heart of the problem is confusion over the nature of the transgendered. "Sex change" is biologically impossible. People who undergo sex-reassignment surgery do not change from men to women or vice versa. Rather, they become feminized men or masculinized women.

Physically, that might be true. It's not the point however. We're not idiots who believe treatment changes our chromosomes. If they dig up my skeleton 1000 years from now, they're going to describe me as female. That's not the point. A lot of these arguments seem to assume we're completely delusional idiots who never took a biology class.

Dr. McHugh,

Why are you hiding your breakthrough from the world?

I mean, you claim that transgender people can be made happy without transitioning or medical intervention, simply by addressing our issues.

Well WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Tell us how to do it.

There are thousands of unhappy transgender people. If you have a way, by all means tell us. If you know how to make a transgender person happy without transitioning, don't be shy. Share it with the world. Share it with your colleagues in the psychiatric and medical professions (and religious vocations) who spent the better part of the past century, looking for a way, ANY WAY, of helping transgender people feel better about their identities without transition, trying everything from electroshock to prayer, and who came up with exactly, nothing, nil, nada, BLANK, ZERO!

Don't keep us in suspense. Tell us.

World's experts condemn the McHugh hoax

by Cristan Williams
July 4, 2014

http://www.transadvocate.com/worlds-experts-condemn-the-mchugh-hoax_n_13924.htm

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) recently ran an op-ed by the right-wing anti-transgender psychiatrist, Paul McHugh. McHugh purposefully misrepresented the research he cited in his article, misleading WSJ readers and the wider population into believing the lie he was selling. When the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) learned of the McHugh hoax, they responded. While WPATH Board Member, Dr. Dan Karasic, responded to McHugh and the WSJ published the response, they refused to publish the part where WPATH notes that McHugh misrepresented the research he cites.
