So I've heard that HRT and alcohol don't mix, but what are the actual risks, and how high are they? Should drinking be strictly prohibited? My gf does not drink much often, if ever. Maybe a beer once a month? or a mixed drink, with very little booze in it, just for taste, but should she not be doing any of this? She is on oral estrogen tabs, spiro, and progesterone. She has never drunken to any point past very early tipsiness, except tonight. Her first drunken experience. It's amusing, but I am just wondering if after this she should never do it again? Any input appreciated ^_^

The only issue is the stress HRT puts on your liver. As long as it is not overdone though I personally see no issue's with it. Alcohol also dehydrates the body so there could be some issue's with that along with the Spiro. Just stay well hydrated.  :)

I don't think she'd have a problem drinking that little that infrequently.  I've never had a problem, and I drink about a half gallon of strong wine about twice a month.

I read that it was recommended to cut down to 14 units a week which is equivalent to about 5 pints of cider. I did that for a month and then just went cold turkey. I haven't had a drink since February the 22nd.

I don't see any risk in drinking as infrequently as your gf does.
I refuse to live in fear! Come hell or high water I will not back down! I will live my life!
But you have no life.
Ha. Even that won't stop me.

I will protect even those I hate, so long as it is right.

Alcohol can affect metabolism of hormones taken orally (i.e. concentration in blood), can add to the dehydration caused by Spiro leading to potential complications and can add to the sedative effect associated with progesterone making one even more sedated and drowsy.

I personally would really limit my intake. Just be careful. ;) And, as always, check with your doctor.
I am not a medical doctor, nor a scientist - opinions expressed by me on the subject of HRT are merely based on my own review of some of the scientific literature over the last decade or so, on anecdotal evidence from women in various discussion forums that I have come across, and my personal experience

On HRT since early 2004
Post-op since late 2005

I hadn't drank for years. There is a bar with wifi in the movie theater I go to, I went there for the wifi and decided to try my favorite drink since its was quite a few years that I had a drink. Tequila Sunrise . wow, like getting a cool drink of water after being stranded in the desert for a few weeks. I don't know if it was bad for me , but it sure tasted good

I've considerably cut down on alcohol since starting hrt, ok I've pretty much quit other than the occasional night out with friends....

When I started my endo didn't seem too concerned with the occasional drink so long as it stays occasional.  He was much more concerned about not smoking, which I also quit...

Just my experience though and I'm no where near a medical professional so yeah, take it for what it's worth.  ;)

Why did she get blitzed after largely just drinking responsibly?

Kindred spirit.  I make sure that I always add tonic and ice to my Gin.  It pays to be careful

Basically because she had never done it before, and finally felt comfortable enough with herself to give it a try. Before she came out, she was very against altering her own state of mind. I guess her reasoning was- get a little intoxicated and the barriers she put up would all come crumbling down. Honestly, the fact that she is willing to inebriate herself is a big step, as silly as it sounds. :P and perhaps blitzed is not necessarily the extent she took it to, she only had a few mixed drinks of bourbon and coke. She is just a lightweight haha.

And thank you everyone for the responses. Makes me feel a lot better about her safety if she chooses to drink!

She's probably being responsibly smart and more power to her for that! Like a lot of the gals said, it's a diuretic as is Spironolactone and more than a few drinks while on that can lead to morbid dehydration. I am prone to alcoholism being Finnish/Norwegian with a little French in the mix and since I'm well past the need for anti-androgens and am on a patch I'm fine with drinking in moderation so far. One thing alcohol does due to it's inherent caloric content is that it stores estrogens in body fat which is not necessarily desirable and is the reason why women are encouraged not to drink more than a few oz per week as excess estrogens can trigger breast and other female cancers.

From first glance, I thought this thread was going to have some really interesting drink recipes.
