How did you pick your new name?

I asked my mom what she would have named me if I was a girl, and she stated that she doesn't know. In fact, she had several boy names planned because she only wanted sons. Ironically, she birthed 4 daughters.

I don't like the feminine form of my birth name, so I didn't choose it. My name is a French word, so I researched a list of popular French names for gals. I am very fond of Anaïs (and it rhymes with my birth name) and I love its meaning as well. It kind of stands out in America, though. So I went with Anna instead; it's basically a simpler version of the name. Coincidentally, Anna was a fairly common name during the year I was born.

The middle name that I choose is my username here: Estelle. The protagonist from Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is partially the reason that I chose it, although I really like how it sounds in conjunction with my first name.  Anna Estelle seems really feminine to me.

My name, Max, was given to me by one of my therapists because of my inability to find a name I didn't hate. It was a name I really liked in childhood, and I'm pretty attached to it now. I chose for it to be short for Maxwell, as that's my favourite variation.

My middle name is Ezra, from Ezra Koenig. It's a unique name with a long history, I have positive personal associations with it, and it just sounds cool.

Though I have no real disconnect from my last name at birth, I always mentally go by the last name Salinger, half as a reference to JD Salinger and half for aesthetic reasons.

Of those you listed, I like ashley Grace best. It flows naturally off the tongue and sounds really pretty. Gina Lynn is also not bad but I've never been a fan of the Gina name. Jessann Hope sounds like you're trying to hard on that one. That's my thoughts on those.

Some of you guys have some really great inspiration for your names. While a few mentioned seem difficult to pronounce, that is what you like. Not my say on that. I simply went for a more modern and fairly common name. My current name is already a more rarer one so I wanted to fit in more to the crowd rather than draw attention.

Choosing a new name is not always as easy as it seems! 

I initially chose a name that meant something to me and which I liked.   When I first went to my gender therapist he asked me if I had chosen a female name yet. I told him and he made a note of it. On the next visit he greeted me by that name and it felt strange and uncomfortable but I stuck with it. As time went by it was obvious that despite liking the name a lot it just didn't feel right and work for me.

I was expressing my frustration and my partner suggested a name that she thought was nice.  I agreed and mulled it over for a while. It started to grow on me and on my partner. As I thought about it I really like it more and more. So we tried that name for a while and it felt good. So I took that name but used the Irish Gaelic spelling which you see below in my signature. I've never looked back.  So I guess you could say that my partner chose it for me!

It's weird, really. I never gave it much thought despite always thinking about living as a female. It just kind of came to me. I really like Sarah. So that's what I changed my name to, socially and legally!

So many lists and I'm still not sure. Just names on websites, media, in passing, anything I hear or see that I like I write down in a specific journal and every now and again I go through it and narrow it down to a small list, and if nothing on there works out, I usually end up going back to the first list, or making a new one. I let my mom make suggestions, but she hasn't really come up with anything.

I've always liked the name Alex and I was looking for an international and unisex name(in the beginning I wasn't sure if I was FTM or Genderqueer), so it just fitted and I decided to go by it.

I had a few I liked, and Ainsley was the only one that my wife and I agreed on. LOL  She is picky, esp. after 25 years of calling me by my boy name.  I was glad she liked Ainsley because that was my preference of the few I was debating on.  I didn't change my middle or last name.

Wow, Ainsley was the name of a character that I created when I was a kid. I've never actually heard it in use before. It's beautiful, isn't it!

I saw Omen II alone when it came out because no one would go with me. There was a crowd of teenaged women in the row ahead of me who wouldn't shut up so I started chuckling evilly every time something was about to happen. First time that I felt good about my voice since it dropped. I had a lovely singing voice before puberty hit.

I reviewed a list of names and said them out loud until I found a few that rolled off the tongue nicely. Then I picked what I liked the most from that list.

I never liked my birth name. Andrea Elizabeth has just never fit me. I went by Andy/i for a while but it never sat right. I go by Javert nowadays but as a pseudo last name even though I have no issue with my legal one.
If I were to ever legally change my first name it would have to be Erik. That name belongs to one of my characters in the short stories I wrote and has always been my go to. I never thought much about middle names, maybe I'll be Erik Javert F. Who knows?

I wanted a name that was similar to my current name. I plan on having two middle names one being my mothers middle name and one being my uncles middle name. So when I change my name I plan on going by Jessie Lee Ann.  A few weeks ago I was going through my late mothers things and came across a postcard I sent her in 1970 that I signed like this....

I have gone by Aubrey for a few years but only online so far. I really like the name for two reasons. My current name starts with an A as does that of my younger sister so it holds to the name conventions my parents went with. Also it was the name of a song by the group Bread and my father really loved that song.

I chose a name from a Beatles song and also changed my last name (since I'd been disinherited) to a simple name synonymous with rock. I figured I'd never have issues with people spelling such a simple word.... But noooo. You should see the list of names that come on my credit cards. I must have ten AKA's on my credit score. How hard is ot to spell stone? I've had Stovic, Stoned, Stoner, Stover, Stoke.... And on and on. At least they get my first name correct. I guess I'm now completely out to the world if they bother to read this bbs.
