Hi, I was just thinking, I don't have the resources for throat surgery at the moment, but... I have a fairly prominent adam's apple, and I'd like very much to be able to hide it. So far my thoughts have included BDSM-type collars and turtlenecks. Any help would be so appreciated, even if its just a link to a previous post with this same question and a reprimand to search the forums before posting a new topic. Thanks!!

How about just a plain, silk scarf?

Buffy

Yep, Yep...

I always used a scarf or wore a turtle neck / polo neck jumper.

I'm very lucky and I don't have anything visable in that department but there are various operations to reduce the problem including a trachel shave (as usual my spelling might be a bit wrong!)...

sometimes i think i dont have a problem, and other times i feel like a turkey.

how much can a tracheal shave remove, anyway?

I think it depends on the surgeon, I'm not sure.  But then again I don't plan on any kind of throat surgery.  Don't want to risk loosing my voice!  :o

I like Jeannette's suggestion, just find a silk scarf.  IMO, invest the money in something else for your transition.  If you can live with it...why waste money on it?

If you can find a shade of shadow / powder that's barely darker than the skin on your neck, just a dab, brushed in with a brush will create an illusion of diminishing the prominence of that feature.  Cover with a light dusting of your standard finishing powder.

Another thing you can do is to be so dynamic and captivating, no one will ever get a chance to look at it!

For the most part, mine's not visible.  However I do worry that as I lose weight it will become prominent, so that's a worry in the back of my mind.  On the other hand I've seen GGs with just as much of one and nobody has seemed to notice.  I think people pretty much just look at my face and that's it.

My mind's all but made up to have a trachial shave first, after laser/electro has done its job on my neck. Some doctors perform it relatively cheap.
"There was a sculptor, and he found this stone, a special stone. He dragged it home and he worked on it for months, until he finally finished. When he was ready he showed it to his friends and they said he had created a great statue. And the sculptor said he hadn't created anything, the statue was always there, he just cleared away the small peices." Rambo III

I think that there are different ways to cover it up, although I know gg's with adam's apples and believe it or not, people don't always notice it unless they are looking for it. You'd be amazed how many things people don't notice.

I'm very lucky in that I don't have one, but I know a few people that do and usually that's the last thing someone notices. Again, if someone is looking for it they will see it, but I know several women, post and pre op, who haven't gotten the shave and have passed fine. I wouldn't let the adam's apple prevent you from going full time.

If you want to cover it, there are lots of ways, although over doing it can also call attention to it.

If you plan on getting your adam's apple fixed, that's great too and I know that it can help with making someone comfortable.

I guess I'm really lucky in the sense that I've never had much of an Adam's Apple.  I just make sure I don't tighten my neck muscles so it sticks out, and then don't worry about it.  But I know that some I've seen do some ridiculous things to cover it up.  Some of those, IMHO, draw more attention to it than if it had been left along.  A necklace on a ribbon is perhaps the worst offender.

ok, so what do you think?  need one or not?
It's questionable.  I don't believe you are on HRT yet.  When you start HRT, there is a small layer of fat that gets thicker just under the surface of all your skin.  Plus quite a bit of fat tends to accumulate in the neck and face.  It's possible that the fat would be enough to hide it.  I think that's the main reason you can't see mine.  I'd have to look at some old pics of myself to be sure though.  If it doesn't get hidden, then I would probably suggest getting the TCR (Thyroid Cartilage Reduction).  As I drop in weight, I still don't know if mine will become too visible or not.  If so, I may end up getting one myself.  I do hate how muscular my neck is though. :-\  At least it hasn't affected me passing...then again I've seen some GGs with muscular necks too.  I try to draw attention to my face (or chest) so nobody looks there.  Looking people in the eyes and smiling helps with the face being noticed and a water bra helps with the chest being noticed. >:D

I guess it all depends on whether people actually *are* reading you or not (which I doubt they will be) and whether you are comfortable with your body.

I've never seen a GG with an adams apple. Being so thin, bones in her neck show isn't the same as an adam's apple.
Ever wonder why it's called an adam's apple? Because Eve doesn't have one.

I'm seeing some misconceptions here. Not to pick on anyone, just trying to dispel certain myths about the female anatomy.

Yes, women have an extra layer of fat. However, men are the ones who put weight on their neck and chin.
Men put weight on their gut, love handles, back, under the chin and neck.
Women put weight on their hips, ass, thighs, lower belly, and cheeks.
Women's facial fat goes to their cheeks, not the neck and chin (unless she's really huge).
Even women who are a little overweight tend to have slender necks in comparison to a male the same size.
There are always exceptions to every rule, but generally that's the way it goes. And the exceptions to this are women with male fat patterns.

I swear you'd think people have never seen a woman before.

Just because you've never seen one doesn't mean they don't exist.  Do a google search if you don't believe me and you'll get a ton of information on the subject.  My "bump" doesn't really show,  but the entire cartilage can be seen if I move my head at certain angles.  Women with adam's apples tend to have the same bumpless mass in their throats, rather than the one with a visible bump that is commonly seen on men.  So whatever, because like I said, I've seen GGs who have it about the same size and shape as I do (which is not a typical male sized one).

Some women do and some don't.  Some men do and some don't.  Men's necks tend to be muscular unless he is overweight, just like women.  However, I wasn't necessarily talking about GGs, I was talking about MTFs.  A lot of MTFs have a bunch of fat accumulate at their necks upon starting HRT.

My back is another place I had a bunch of fat suddenly accumulate after starting HRT.  It has pretty much stayed there until I started losing weight.  Again, this is about MTFs, which might have a different experience than GGs, although I know back fat in one of those concerns (particularly with women) when it comes to corsets because having it cinched too tight makes the fat bulge out.

Pffft, I wish.  My cheeks remain flat and my neck still has some fat in it.

What you said may be true for women who have had estrogen going through their body for years and years, but I was specifically referring to MTFs.

oh Ok. I thought you were referring to women in general. My bad. ;)

*sighs* Technically females also have a larnyx, but theirs does not grow enough to stick out like the male's larnyx.
If on the very are female (maybe 1 in a 10,000) it did, it would likely be due to a hormonal disorder producing too much T in her body.
It is not the norm. Women in general do not have adam's apples.

In my case, that's what I saw, all the fat under the jawline disapeared and my cheeks are bulking up, especially in the front  (very slow but continuous process). The result, my adam's apple is a bit more visible than initially.

You be the judge, it also shows I have a very thin (12 15/16 inch around, that's very small!!) and long neck (6 inch!!). If someone's looking for it, they'll see it for sure. But most people look at my face, men looks in my bustline ;-).

Good idea!  I'll show what mine looks like too for my normal head position and then I'll show what it looks like when I'm trying to make it appear.  Another thing I remember is that when I speak in a more feminine voice, it rises up as a result and slides up into a glob of fat I have between my chin and throat.

Like I said, my neck is NOT thin and is somewhere between 15-15.5 inches around and is 6" long as well.  Like I said, it's not one of my favorite features, but I have read that muscle can build up on the neck of people who pop their neck a lot to compensate for the stretched tendons that would normally hold the head up.  I think that's what happened in my case. :(

It's not clear what it is at all. Just looks like part of that 'bump' right there that all necks have. That part of the neck does usually stick out. The neck, collarbone, and below the collarbone and above the breasts 'breast plate?' are all typically female, and the 'adam's apple' really isn't clear at all. I would just assume it was that part of the neck right there that sticks out on everybody.
It's really not noticable or recognizable as an adam's apple.

you're right, i'm not totally comfortable with my body -- but thanks, i am more than satisfied with 'cute'  :)
Well, if you look cute and androgynous now, you should do REALLY well on HRT.  I would definitely wait.
