Worried about future job prospects

I want to transition and I'm ready to do it.  But there's one major issue stopping me.  I'm really worried about how it's going to effect my ability to find future employment, or even keep my current job.  I have no safety net if things go south since my parents have made it clear they won't support this whole trans thing.

As it is, I've already had a rough time finding jobs.  I once got laid off from a job and it took me 2 years to find another one.  Then the same thing happened to me again and I just got a new job after 16 months of searching.  And that's me as a "clean cut" guy.  I can't imagine showing up to an interview as trans and being taken seriously.

There are plenty of organisations and businesses that are going to be trans friendly. They want someone who is reliable and has the skills to do the job. Depending on the laws in your state they may not be able to discriminate against you on the grounds of being trans anyway. I transitioned in my work place, they were very supportive and I think that has been a similar experience with other members here so it can happen. Good luck!!

I went through the same thing you did. Laid off a boat load of times and long time spans in between finding work. I recently transitioned at work. I took a major leap of faith and did it. It went smoothly. I'm glad because I really love my job and what I do. My job requires me to work independently during the overnight shift. I don't have to deal with too many people and it's great and make decent money too. I can understand being scared. I work for a non corporate company and consider myself lucky. Research your company policy about trans rights/lgbt protection laws. Good Luck!
