It's also possible to have multiple worlds on one server with different game rules for each. Most servers tend to have a spawn hub world where you first come in, which explains the rules of the server and where regular members can't build (only admins / mods of the server etc). That world has portals that takes you to the other worlds the server has to offer. Most servers offer at least a survival and a creative world (and typically a PvP world too). It's not uncommon to also have setups like a public survival world for everyone and a private survival world for ViP's / members only etc. and things like that too
Personally, I too am most interested in creative mode - survival is cool and all, but going through the whole "resource gathering" bit does get a bit old when you've been playing for like, 4 or 5 years lol
I really love building things on a large scale these days, which is something that's usually fairly impractical with survival mode unless you can dedicate a lot of time and get a team together.
