I want to join Facebook groups but...

Hey everyone! The recent post about FTM groups on Facebook got me interested in joining some, just to maybe get to know some other transguys, but I'm worried about the privacy thing. I mean, I'm out on there as trans* and it's the same one I've had since I first created it as a Freshmen pretending to be a straight girl, before I came out as liking girls, long before I realized anything, so it's not like it's a huge secret. But I still don't feel comfortable with people seeing that I'm joining FTM groups. I did a little reading and heard that your friends get suggestions to join groups that you're in and I definitely don't want that, I only have three trans* friends on Facebook. Plus I'm interested in checking out some dating groups so I DEFINITELY don't want friends or family to see that. What do you all know about this? Thank you in advance!

I created a new account with my chosen name, and I have recently joined a few trans groups with this account.  My current primary Facebook account is still with my birth name, since I am not out to most of my family and friends.

Just make a new account You can use any name you want.

I'm only part of secret groups that can only be found via invite/emailing them. I'm stealth, so publicly visible groups are definitely not an option for me.

This is a tough call, I decided to use my existing account and not create another one.

This is an issue I dealt with. If anything, people probably assume I'm a lesbian. Supposedly people can see what groups you join (My friend showed me what comes up on his timeline when I join a group), but not what anyone posts. I guess it probably isn't a secret if people can see. I'm not too upset by it as I have enough friends with enough friends of their own where they probably didn't even recognize it and I talk about LGBT issues enough where it wouldn't raise a red flag. However, if you're either stealth, not out, etc., make another Facebook. I did that when I wanted to lessen the amount of posts people saw on shoe groups I'm in, but I ended up not even using it. Secret/Invite only groups don't come up on anyone's newsfeed and closed groups don't show what's posted.

I'm not sure it recommends closed groups to other friends.

Almost all of the groups I've seen are closed and I'm in at least one secret one. You can also go look through and edit your Activity Log and change your privacy settings to keep your friends from seeing your groups. The only way they'd know is if they went looking for a FTM group to join. Then it would say that you're a member.
