Results with Spiegel?

So I'm deeply considering getting FFS with Spiegel, my most recent consult with him went super well and he was very reassuring my issues with my head/face could be solved with his FFS procedures, namely forehead and jaw surgeries.

He said I didn't have much to worry about and that I'm in a really good position where I'm starting.  I guess that's reassuring...but I'm wondering if anyone who had surgery with him had a lot of trouble passing before they had surgery and then FFS helped them a lot with that.

I'm not even looking to be stealth, just pass as female more often than not with strangers and new people.

Thanks!

I had Spiegel do just about everything as I really needed it (apart from tracheal).  I passed "sometimes" before, and my impression is that I do generally now. I say impression, as it's not just face that determines passing and also people are not really honest about telling you whether you do or not (which is not the humane encouragement they think it is. One wants a realistic evaluation, not validation of your choice.)  Much depends on what he is working with, and your whole body package (chest and shoulders , posture, musculature). He tries his best to make you look a female version of you, and does well with that and understanding how each portion of what he does influences the whole outcome. But there are limits with what he can do with jaws and strong features. He can't reduce a jaw beyond a certain point, or a nose. That's just reality. Still, I have never had an incident or problem about passing (apart from some who knew me before and can't deal with the change -- which means they won't even use the correct pronouns.) Whether that means I pass enough that at worst they are not sure if I used to be male or that I live in an area that is more tolerant, I can't say. I remain very self conscious which probably doesn't help.  I keep waiting for some sort of epiphany or a moment that "proves" passing. I suppose that will pass. I know I am vastly different postop, but my situation regarding passing is different than most as I was "known" in my town and a lot of people just interact with me as usual as I am no stranger. For what it's worth, I do get treated as female in discriminatory ways, which I suppose is a backhanded affirmation.

I have heard from a several people postop from Spiegel. Some expected too much and were disappointed, some didn't feel he was aggressive enough, some are very happy. I would caution that all plastic surgeons speak in soothing tones about what they can do for you (and their office gatekeepers are really in sales TBH).  Spiegel will soften you and make your face more feminine which will help passing. Unless that's really all you needed to pass (which is understandably very rare) don't expect a magic bullet. I don't think I would or should have chosen anyone else to do it, but I think I was realistic about what to expect: I am not among those on his office wall or on the website gallery.

He wants to please you. Do your best to explain to him exactly what you want, and have him explain how all the work he'll do will act in concert. If you did the virtual FFS with Alexandra, talk about it. The outcome won't look the same (mine doesn't), but you can get a general idea of how the changes work. It sounds as if you had specific work in mind, which helps guide him.  I also gave him pictures of my mother (my only close female relative) which help him understand what were family traits. Most people who know us both see her in me, but only enough to show the relationship -- not a clone, thankfully. The more you interact about it with him the better. I did several times.

I would only add (for anyone else reading this, really) that if your transition is pinned to passing and FFS as part of that, be cautious. You have to want to do it even if the FFS doesn't do all you secretly hope it will.  If you are committed to transitioning, and want or need FFS as part of that, Speigel is a reliable choice.

I've been more than happy with the results from Dr. Spiegel.  He is very subtle in his approach as his goal is to keep you looking like you, but feminized.  I had my FFS on November 4th and a pleasantly surprised how quick my recovery has been.  I still have plenty of swelling, but that's to be expected, and should clear up over the next 6 to 9 months.

4 days before FFS and 2 weeks after

This is 1 month after

And for a better idea.  This one is 3months before.

WHHAAAATTTTTT. I would have never guessed you had THAT much work done. That's insane. He must be truly amazing because you look so natural. Congrats! :) I'm sure you're more than content.

It's a lot of work, but subtle on each thing done.  He really is an amazing surgeon!  Yes, my confidence is beyond where I ever thought it would be.  I had terrible dysphoria before my ffs, and no longer experience that pain.  It's something I had to do.

I was very very disappointed with my VFFS results, and even just having nose alone done it looks way better than VFFS predicted.  Actually, the VFFS seem very limited with what FFS could do for my face to be quite honest.

Spiegel told me he would be able to achieve what I wanted and that anything they couldn't fix was already there anyhow. (facially)  So I guess that's good.

You also mentioned passing has a lot to do with body and not just face of course, and I expressed that concern and he said I was perfectly fine from the neck down anyhow.

In all fairness, when has there been a result by any surgeon that looked beyond recognizable? Aside from the one on Spiegel's site where the square burly jaw goes to a narrow jaw/pointy chin (which seems to be a 1 in a million result), does not everyone look like a feminine version of themself after surgery?

spooky

Before FFS with Dr Spiegel, I passed *most* of the time.  I passed as long as no one caught me from certain angles or moving in certain ways.  Because I was aware of this, I was doing *a lot* of policing of my every movement to make sure no one clocked me.

Since surgery I'm pretty sure I pass all of the time (and those times I don't pass are due to voice slip ups, not appearance).  I wasn't even fully aware of how hard it had been before FFS until I had it done and realized that I didn't have to worry about these things anymore.  It sounds cheesy but I feel set free.

What I had done:
Trachea shave
Mandible contouring
Total $14000
(He also suggested brow bossing and a brow lift which I think would have been about $8000 more and which I elected not to do.)

I just booked my FFS with him for March.  I'm having the forehead package--which includes a scalp advancement, a brow lift, and forehead recontouring (maybe reconstruction?), and a nose job.  I'm excited, I kind of can't wait for the two months to go by!

I had FFS with Spiegel and I have had some bad side effects.
Scar on my hairline
Bumps along my forehead and browridge
Chin feels kinda weird
there is a whole in my gums where he made the incision to contour my jaw
worst of all... have problem breathing out of one of my nostrils

Spiegel seemed like a nice guy, definitely tried to "Sell" himself but thats normal.
I'm going to have to get some of these things fixed of course, especially the nose since it affects my day to day life quite negatively.
I feel a bit nervous going back to his office... will he take me seriously a few years after surgery? Will he make it worse or better if he does work on it? I guess it won't hurt to try...

Now as for how I look sometimes I feel self conscious but overall tbh I think it was for the better.
If I could go back in time I would NOT do my jaw however...and maybe I would have learnt to deal with my forehead and hairline...

Maybe my post seems far too critical... just to warn everyone that you have to love yourself first and no one "needs" FFS... you trade some problems for others.

Look on this site for Spiegel's reviews... he seems to do more good than bad, thats for sure. Just be 100% sure of what you want done before you go for it.

Nobody needs FFS....unless they like not passing as female.
I need FFS.

I need FFS.

Not sure what this means? I think a minority of people end up getting FFS.
