What do you think of the name Evan?

Hello there! It's been a while since I last posted here! I wanted to ask you guys what you think of my chosen name, Evan. I've heard it's not a very manly name and that there's an actress named Evan and some girls are named that too (well, some are even named Dylan, my goodness...), but is it still a male name? Would people think I'm a girl if they read/heard my name? Is the name Evander a more masculine name? I like that name too, but I'd still go by Evan.

I know that some guys have unisex names but they could still pass as men even if named Christina lol, in my case not so much. I'm already on T (+3 months) but I'll probably look androgynous and like a 15-year-old kid for the rest of my life so I need a very unambiguous name to not draw confusion XD.

Evan is generally considered a masculine name so people won't be thinking you're a girl with that.

I've known several people named Evan and all were guys (I've always liked the name, too, though it's not one I've considered for myself).  It would never occur to me that a person named Evan might be female.  As opposed to Dylan, which is sometimes a girls' name.   

I think of Evan as being a "normal" name for guys in their teens-30s.  Evander is more quirky, though more clearly male ("ander" of course derives from "andros," the Greek word for man.)  As such, I'd actually consider Evan the more "masculine" sounding name-- guys names frankly tend to be boring.

Evan is definitely a guys name, I wouldn't call it ambiguous. If a girl told me she was called Evan I wouldn't question it but if I see that name I definitely think male. With androgynous people, I would probably think male rather than female with that name. Dylan (and other spelling) I see and think male or female, but Evan I would definitely assume male unless the person was clearly trying to present female.

I think Evan is a great name. I met an Evan last season while working. He was cool, he gave me a stack of Playboys because his young son moved in with him.

From someone's point of view, who doesn't speak English as his first language, Evan is definetly a male name. And a nice one, too.

The worst thing that could happen if your name is Evan is that people might think you're Welsh.

I love the name Evan! It's a great masculine name that isn't too out there or too terribly common. Evander... not so much (sorry).

it could be considered unisex like dylan, charlie, taylor, w/e else but mostly people associate it with males so i wouldn't worry too much about it.

Thanks everyone for your answers! It's really reassuring to hear you guys say that it's clearly still considered a boys name. But please explain to me how the name Dylan can possibly be gendered female lol. To me it's as masculine as the name John or Brian! But of course maybe in America it's different.

Indeed Evan is a good name, I was actually thinking of switching to it.  Although I love the name Brett, I have just struggled with it thinking that it fits me.  Everyone thinks Evan fits me and it isn't as bad as a transition from my birth name as Brett is.  Brett also doesn't go so great with my last name.  I need a two syllable first name since my last name is one syllable.

My birth name starts with an A, but I just don't like Adam, Andrew, or Aiden for me.  I have been trying to figure out a name for myself forever, and it wasn't until I got top surgery last year that I decided that with going to Garramone's and NBR, I had to pick something! So, I went with Brett and soon after came to this site, so I just rolled with it.

I am moving to the point of transitioning at work, so I HAVE to pick a name.  When my GF comes home I will post a pic (the same one I posted in the last passing thread...not the current passing thread), because that is like the only pic I have.  I will ask you guys to weigh in.

America definitely uses Dylan for both guys and girls. And especially the spelling Dillon I think is mostly female. But I knew several Dylans and they were equally male and female. It's weird how a male name in one place can be a unisex or even female name elsewhere. I actually made a little comic thing about "trans 101" a few years ago and one character was an mtf woman named Sasha. I recently was informed by someone in a different country that in other places that is a male name, while to me it's 100% female. I've been meaning to change her name since then, so I don't accidentally offend anyone.
