Anybody else have this problem with binders?

I don't really know if it's from the binder or just stress or whatever, but I have been having severe neck and shoulder pain lately that sometimes turns into migraines.  Has anyone else had neck problems and/or should issues from binding?

It's a possibility that the binder could cause these pains. Make sure to take hot shower/baths and take regular breaks from the binder (don't sleep in it).

Hi, I am a perfect example of living with pain more notably from binding so from my experience:
I don't recall having migraines from binding but definitely severe shoulder pain that consumes my entire back as well.  I also suffer from stress but I can't say I really understood the cause of my migraine headaches because I would even sometimes wake up with them.

I haven't been binding long, but the first time that I wore mine for a few hours I had terrible shoulder pain the next day. Same thing the second time too, but then it improved after I learnt to position myself differently.

Make sure you stretch and breathe fully while you're binding. That may help. And stick to the no more than 8 hours rule. I personally never had any kind of headaches just while binding.

Are you on T? I did get headaches the first two weeks. Chalked it up to not eating enough.

I've had bad shoulder pain when binding when the straps were being pulled down too tight.  When I started "hiking up" the binder so there isn't so much tension on the straps it seemed to help quite a bit.  Might not be the issue for you, but that's what it was for mine anyway.

Thanks.  I don't know if the migraines are neck/shoulder pain related or stress related.  I have a ton of stress in my life over the past several months.  I have thought about not wearing it for a while to see if it helps.  I tried and failed...I would rather have the physical pain than the dysphoria that comes w/o it.  I don't sleep in it and wear it for probably 8-12 hours a day.  I'm not on T yet.  I'm honestly not even sure who or what I am.  Just confused.  Anyways.  Thanks for the replies.

Yes, it's probably the binder. I know that you can get back and shoulder pain as well as migraines from ill-fitting bras. Binders are probably worse since they're not meant to support, but to constrict everything all up.

I bind with sports bras and I can only wear them for so long, I'd rather hang loose than deal with the pain.

I wonder how common this problem is? There must be a method for finding well-fitted and comfortable binders, right? This looks like something you could potentially apply to your binder when gauging how well it fits you:

The underband is riding up

Lift up your arms to see whether the bra is tight enough. The underband should fit firmly against the body so that it does not slide about during normal activity.

The shoulder straps are digging in

The underband of a bra provides the majority (80 per cent) of support for the breasts, with the straps providing just 20 per cent. If the bra straps are digging in, it could be because the underband is too loose and you are over-adjusting the straps to feel supported. When you do this, the straps pull the bra up at the back, another sign that the band is too loose.

The centre fold is lifting away from the body

The centre front of the bra should lie flat against the body. If it doesn't, the cups could be too small.



The back band is overstretched

If your straps are too far apart at the back (they should be parallel), it may be that your bra band is too small and so is overstretching.

Thanks for the link and info.  I don't think its too small, but I suppose I could be wrong.  It's Underworks 988 XS.  I have a 29 inch chest, which is in the xs range.  It doesn't feel too tight or anything, but maybe it's the straps.  I dunno.  Going to the doc tomorrow.

I only had shoulder pain from binding but that was because my binder cuts into my shoulders...I solved that by putting cloth or folded paper towels under the 'straps' part. Then it became manageable however I do have scars on my shoulders from it now :l.. If your binder is giving you migraines that seems like a serious problem and it might be to small?
