Ok, so I'm considering flying for the first time as "Alana"  Well not really, I don't have any documentation changed yet.  So as far as the TSA and the airline are concerned I'll still be my male self, but dressed up... pretty.  There's a blog I follow where a trans X-dresser does this pretty frequently for her work trips.  I'll probably decided tomorrow just before I leave.  Either way I'll let you know what happens and how it goes.

Wish me luck!

Fly being you gurl ~ as long as you're safe.

Thank you Skyler.

So I did it.  I changed before I left and drove to the airport.  Parked and applied my makeup.  Then rode the shuttle and went through security.  Only glitch was I was pre-checked and my heels set off the metal detector.  So I put them in the x-ray and walked through.  It's so nice not to wear shoes with laces.  I'll post more later...  Let's just say Now I've gone (excuse the pun) Trans-continental.

I flew the reverse route as well, Orlando to LAX.  Nonstop both ways.  It was my first time to both Florida and the Orlando area.  On Sunday I had a morning class and an afternoon workshop for my professional society.  My profession is very conservative and very much mostly white males: primarily Mechanical and Aerospace Engineer types.  There was a conference going on as well, but since I didn't secure the approvals, I just went for the training and committee meetings.

On Monday, I didn't have anything scheduled, so I slept in and went shopping.  My first stop was JC Penny's for a new pair of hose, and I picked up a nude shade of lipstick.  I then walked to a Panera Bread for lunch, visited CVS picked up a new eye shadow pack, and a tube of lip gloss.  I used the nude lipstick and eye shadow on my return trip.  Oh, and I picked up a journal with a lock and key from a bookstore, to log my transition.

Wednesday morning I got up at 3 am. and was ready just over an hour later.  The shuttle was supposed to be there at 4:30.  I was determined to wear my heals all day.  I went down and checked out.  Then I sat and waited for the shuttle.  While waiting another person checked out then went outside, as 4:30 approached I went out and we struck up a conversation.  She said she was there for the conference, and I mentioned I was too, sort of.  She said she hadn't seen me there and I said I was just doing peripheral things and that wasn't too surprising to me.

The shuttle arrived and took us both to our terminals.  I walked in and went through security.  I gave the TSA lady my ID and scanned my phone and she replied, "Have a  wonderful trip Miss"   This time I knew that my heels wouldn't pass the metal detector, so I put them in the scanner.  then walked to the tram, grabbed a coffee at Starbucks for Alana (alas they didn't write my name on the cup), and walked to the gate.  I've found the key for me is to walk slowly, too fast and the shoe slips off my foot or my left ankle starts to get weak.  I found a seat and waited, I got up once to use the lady's and a second time to pick up a magazine.  Boarding time, and I'm still in my heels, and feeling pretty good about walking down the jet way.

When I had confirmed the flight out on Friday, I'd changed my return seat to an isle seat.  so when I sat down I didn't bother buckling in.  As the doors were closing I realized I got the whole row to myself, so I moved my under seat bag under another seat and took my shoes off.  I understanding the fem shoes off thing my wife does, though she doesn't wear pumps with 3" heels either.  Here's a photo from my laptop web cam:

The flight attendant were very nice.  I really like the experience on Delta.  I even got one to take my picture with my phone:

I got up a couple times, I'd put my heels back on and slowly make my way back.  After landing I still was walking with my heels, I made it back to my vehicle, then switch to my flats for the drive.  On the way back I stopped and went shopping.  I tried on several dresses, but decided not to buy.  Most of them were on clearance, but I'll likely wait until this weekend and go back.

Just before I got home, I stopped to change and clean my makeup off.  I had to go back to him mode...  I'm counting the days I won't have to do that...  Anyway, let me know how you like the nude lip color and eye shadow, which is the Almay light blue/medium blue/dark blue combination.

Hey Alana, sounds like it went really well, that's so awesome! When I read your first post, for some reason I thought you were a pilot, so when I read your latest post and you mentioned where you were sitting, I was like, "Shouldn't she be at the front flying the plane?" haha that was such a slow moment. Anyway, I'm glad it went well, and you look lovely in the pics, I think that dress(?) suits you so well :)

LOL, thanks Jason.  I have about 60 hours in a Cessna 150 but never made it to solo flight.  The only flying I do anymore is commercial carrier.  I do really love this dress, its garnered several complements (including your, thanks) and will probably add more color-block dresses to my wardrobe in the future.

I glad to hear it all went well. The only thing about this that worries me is the fact that the tsa didn't really question this. I understand the process of playing the role reversal and trying to be accepted into the world as other gender, but it does worry me. With the amount planes recently that started disappearing and hijacking from 9/11; this seems like the one place to me not to try this. Who's to say that a terrorist isn't trying to do the same thing. It really does frighten me.

Now I mean no disrespect towards you and I'm happy it all worked out. For me personally I would not fly as the opposite gender until the legal documents have be updated. There's just too much right now going on with airlines to cause any one to try this.

I don't think it really matters. Regardless of what you wear or anything like that, everyone follows the same rules and goes through the same checks or whatever. Any apparent discrepancy (for lack of a better word) between someone's gender marker and their appearance/clothing isn't really going to be suspicious in and of itself.

Even though it's a hit to my ego, I have to admit that I pretty much still look like my ID, only with long hair, makeup.  You have to remember, they also get guy's who have clean shaven ID with lots of facial hair, as well as the opposite.

That said, I really enjoyed the "Have a nice flight miss".

I see.

Well I suppose that this could be a touchy subject for some and not for others. Obviously things went well, so that I'm glad for that.

I honestly wouldn't be too mad if I was already well into hrt and they questioned me. I know It would hurt a little being called the opposite gender by a person like this; but its their job to make sure everyone is on the plane safely and accounted for. So that would assure me in the end. being on the plane, though the stewardess calling you miss was nice.

Actually, that was the TSA agent that checked my ID in Orlando who said "Have a nice flight, Miss" even after seeing the -M- on my state drivers license.

Oh, here's a blog from Kim who's been doing this for more than a decade.  She even addresses using liquid filled prosthesis.
