(trigger warning: periods)

Okay guys, so I really can't deal with my shark week anymore. It's been awfully dysphoric for me and I can barely bear through it every month. I know that sometimes birth control is prescribed to ease periods and I've done my research. I can't have the pill because that has feminizing effects but I think that an IUD (a Hormonal IUD, specifically) is perfect for me because it doesn't have feminizing effects and is pretty low maintenance. I heard they insert it once and you only have to get it renewed only every couple of years or something. It doesn't sound that bad once I get over the fact that it has to be inserted. But I don't know where to start. I asked my mother months ago about getting me birth control because of my cycle but she's kind of ignored the issue since then. For those that have any advice/experience with this, where do I start? How would I be able to have this prescribed to me? I also checked and this is covered under my insurance, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Also, I'm aware I made a thread about this in the past but I think I'm ready to take the next step and go to a doctor so that's why I made a new thread.

You 18? If so make a doctors appointment and ask about it. They won't put stuff in during a period so plan accordingly. Doctor might want you to have a pap smear first also.

Do I have to go to my personal doctor or schedule an appointment off the bat with a gyno?

I've never had one so best bet is to call the doctor first and ask them.

Alright, thanks!

Any other opinions out there ? Especially from people who have had Skyla/Mirena before.

I would definitely do more research on Mirena and it's side effects.  My SO has Mirena and her periods have been brutal; average length of time over the last 6 months has been about 10-12 days.  My ex-wife also had issues with Mirena.  It's not for everyone, but you may get lucky.  Best of luck finding something that works for you. :)

I have a Skyla and love it, I pretty much suggest it to everyone. You actually can be on your period when getting it inserted, some doctors actually prefer you to be because your cervix is more open I believe.

But just call your gyno or have your mom set you up for an appointment. They might have you come in multiple times, once to talk about your options and really decide and once to insert it. They had me take a pap smear and because I was sexually active also had me take a pregnancy test.

The actual insertion was about as terrible as any gyno appointment. The speculum is the worst for me, I just don't like the feeling of being stretched open like that. But so once that is in, they will measure your cervix(you might feel a pinch) and then insert the IUD. It's like a very strong cramp. Nothing that I hadn't dealt with before but if you don't normally deal with strong period cramps it might be more painful. It was over in a few minutes. You also might have some mild cramps for a week or two.

You have to come back in a month to make sure everything is in place and that's that. Unless anything pops up you're good to go for 3-7 years depending on if you got skyla or mirena.

I personally like my IUD because it's worry free birth control for one, but it also has made my periods basically spotting. I don't even need to wear a tampon sometimes. Also it's only releasing hormones in the uterus so it doesn't affect the rest of your body, something that I had too many issues with when I tried the pill.

Unfortunately don't have any advice, but wanted to throw in support.  "Shark week" has always been horribly dysphoric for me, but I never really understood why for most of my life.  I'm also considering some sort of suppressant birth control.  My greatest fear is also the insertion.  Would love to hear updates about your journey on this!

Thanks for the helpful info everybody. I heard that Skyla is better for people under 30 or those who haven't given birth so since then I've really been looking into Skyla. I'll try to make an appointment as soon as time allows

Thank you for the support Jack :) I will keep updates going once I get the ball rolling about this.
