Hey all, I was wondering what grocery stores are trans friendly? Mainly I'm looking at getting a job at Publix, but if that doesn't work out, Wal-Mart perhaps but, are they trans friendly? Publix in particular, I hear run a military rules. Example, I heard if they see you with any stubble, they'll send you home. But, does that apply to WHILE you're on the clock there? Do they expect you, especially woman to shave while on the clock? Lastly, do they force MtF to cut their long hair? I hear they won't allow past the shoulders for the guys...

One last thing, what all can one expect to possibly be doing at a grocery store?
Thanks for the help in advance.

Are you applying for the job as a man or a woman? You will most likely need to follow the dress and grooming requirements for the sex that you have been hired as.

Who is trans friendly and who isnt? Well it is not so clear cut. For example one of my Jobs is for a fast food place that at the corporate level is very anti lgbt, but at the store I work at I have never had an issue. At my other job it is a much more liberal company but I went through all sorts of hell...go figure.

By how I worded my post, I didn't think I'd need to say it but, to answer your question, woman. And I don't know how they'd treat any woman who has a beard/mustache and tries to shave it, regardless of trans or not. (Im referring to their strict policy such as Publix's)

The last few parts that you wrote in the op did not leave it clear for me. Sorry.

If you are hired as a woman then why would you worry about them forcing mtf to cut their hair or what shoulder length for the guys?  Don't even bring up that you are mtf. Just be the woman you are and you will be treated the same as the other women.

QuotePublix declines to participate in the annual survey of the Human Rights Campaign which forms the basis for HRC's Corporate Equality Index.[56] For 2014, HRC assigned Publix a score of zero.[57] The company's non-discrimination and Equal Employment Opportunity policies do not extend to LGBT people. The company's supplier diversity program does not include LGBT owned businesses.

In 2014, Publix was fined by the Board of Human Rights of Broward County, Florida for discrimination involved in the termination of an LGBT employee.[58]

Well, that sucks, anyone know if that's just limited to certain states or if there are some Publix's that are trans friendly? Oh and, thank you for posting that. What do you think would happen if I tried to apply at Publix? Has anyone done this?

No, I'm sorry.

It doesn't work that way sadly. Most of us can't get the dang gender marker on our IDs etc. changed without having SRS (This includes me, though I've yet to do research for my state but odds are I can't change it without SRS) and because they require these oh so revealing IDs, you cannot keep it from them. Now, you might could keep it from them if you can pass, have all the IDs etc. changed and name change etc. and more so if you aren't having to shave a beard etc. but even then, people look at your BG records and thus there is still a chance they will find out, more so if you list any previous places of employment and one of them outs you. Now it is true you can hide it until you get hired, but then the IDs and such out you. Anyway, the point of my post was to ask if they/any stores are trans friendly and to find out what they would make a trans MtF do/not do, because, you can't hide it.

Oh! Off the top of my head, I know that Target is actively trans-friendly. They're everywhere, there's no obnoxious music playing, and they have a better font selection. The downside is that they drug test.

Here's a list. I should'a thought of this the other day!

Get your name changed first.

Then get/change your passport and pass card. Gender can be changed with a acceptable doctors letter same as your S.S.

Use the pass card as I'D

Notifying of your past employers to update your records, along with your schools.

Steps before make after smoother

what state do you live in? You should do your research before just assuming you can't. It will make life a whole lot easier.

And you can at the least get your passport changed without surgery

Yes, even with everything changed they may still find out, and it could be an issue. But much less likely and issue than having all your id say male while your saying you are a woman. That gets very very difficult.
