I am a retired kidney doctor. And, despite all of the jokes and give and take, there is a physiological reason for the way that men and women typically urinate. The kidneys and ureters, which connect to the bladder are the same in both. The bladder is of the same size, although the wall tends to be thinner in females; but, the big difference comes from it's location and the length and position of the urethra. The bladder rests on the pelvic floor for everyone, but, in women it is situated behind the uterus and most of the urethra is actually embedded in the top of the vagina. The female urethra is only in one section, which is very short. In males, the urethra is in 3 sections and is much longer at about 8 inches. It travels through the prostrate and the entire length of the penis. Women can pee standing up, but the urethral opening is small and hidden, usually in the labial folds, and it takes some practice to "guide" the stream. Some women use paper cones and can avoid sitting on public toilet seats with some positioning of the labia. But, the big thing, is that the seated position gives the best anatomic angle and, with the help of gravity and muscle contraction the most favorable way for women to pee. Men, because of the length of the ureter and the directed urine stream from the penis need more help from gravity and pelvic muscles. As well, men tend to get thickened prostates with age or infections, and it becomes even more important to stand to get all the help one can get to "get it out". Personally, I love to sit.....and, that makes me feel more like the woman I am!!!!! Hope this is not TMI (too much info), as my teenage daughter sometimes reminds me. Blessings, Sheila
