Yesterday was the last straw.  After being told that all remodeling on 'the unisex bathroom' in my building would take place after working hours and on weekends, I found the toilet seat covered with spackle overspray (along with everything else,) in the morning (a critical time to visit...) then around lunchtime the facility was offline as the person performing the work put two ladders in and primed and painted the facility.

I have video.

I have photos.

I've had enough.

And I went to my units' brand-new EEO rep.

My request is for answers -- clarification on exactly what 'other peoples' rights mean and are, and what my rights are, and where by the regulations the boundaries betwixt the two are.

I'd also like to revisit the Bathroom Debacle, and get an answer as to why the people who know of the 'agreement' that I use only the 'unisex' bathroom I can count on one hand, while most of the people in the building have no idea I have no choice, as they DO, of which of the 3-per-gender facilities to use.

I don't want to roast anyone.

At it's core, I enjoy my job there.

Thank god I don't NEED it...

May I ask for advice on how to defend against conservative issues and suggest things more trans-friendly to management without getting them more defensive than they already will be?  Your advice will be appreciated...

I can understand your frustration. It always seems that we are the uncounted minority. The smart thing to do is to overlook this and focus battles on much more earth shaking events that will make a difference. ;)

Karen,

I know how frustrated you must feel.  Do what you are doing. Be patient. Don't lose your job over the restroom issue. It isn't worth it.

You do have an F on your driver's license do you not?  I don't know how far CA's protections will go on a military base.  But they may be required to submit to CA law here if it comes to it.

I'm sorry for you.  I really am.

Take care hon.

As I said, I'm looking for answers to questions, and I don't feel I can trust my chain of command to provide me with unbiased information.

I'm using the EEO route to get those answers.  If the Section Supervisor has a cow over it, then so be it.  I'd really like to know - if other people have the right to refer to me using male pronouns and call me sir - do I and others have the right to refer to others by the gender by which they do not present?

The bathroom incident was a motivator, though...

Unfortunately there are two principal courses of action:

1) Ask some questions from your EEO but just take the personal hits until you can get out quietly. This keeps your profile low and gives you a good shot at the next job.

2) Escalate and request legal status.  This will get you noticed in a big way and it is very likely it could hit the news somewhere.  If you "burn" any bridges, it could follow you to your next working gig.  It is a very small world.

It truly hurts to have to play the meek lamb.  But unless you want to become a very visible social advocate for the TS cause, that is pretty much the best route to take.  Meanwhile, you can come here to rant and rave and we will listen and help dilute some of that righteous anger you feel.
