WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Department officials said Thursday that hormone treatment for gender reassignment has been approved for Chelsea Manning, the former intelligence analyst convicted of espionage for sending classified documents to the WikiLeaks website........

====================

About time she is being treated as a human. Right or wrong what she did in the eyes of people she should not be denied who she is as a person.

What are we not allowed to say about her?

In any case, I'm thrilled she's getting what she needs.

Oh, awesome.  I thought I would get in trouble for saying that "a true heroine is born"!  I love that chick.

Misgendering, subtle or overt will be dealt with so leave politics out of this thread.

Thank you all!

I think the way we treated her was a national embarrassment. I'm glad that Obama & Company finally did the right thing.
Have you read my short story The Eve of Triumph?

I'm glad she's getting her treatment, it's a step forward for all of us.

Being from Canada the concept is a bit different here militarily but... If someone devoted their life to protect their country then they deserve respect period. ;)

News is news but positive news is always way better to hear.

Maybe she will bring better light to the LGBTQ struggles in the U.S. military.

Ditto.

This is independent of any other opinion I have of her. Even the worst of the worst in custody deserve to have their rights respected.

I'm not a fan of her or her actions at all.  This isn't the place for explaining why, but I wanted to have my cards face-up.  I'm not impressed by Mr. Miranda ("You have the right to remain silent...") either, but good policy doesn't worry about how much you like a particular defendant.

The "what" gets a lot of attention here, and for good reason.  I'm also a little bothered by the "how" and "why" though.  It's bad enough they were talking about withholding healthcare from an inmate, but the mechanism for doing so simply doesn't exist in a civilized society bound by the rule of law.  We can lessen punishments for various reasons, but when you have somebody who has already been sentenced for her crimes you absolutely don't get to throw in a malicious little torture simply because the inmate hands you a lever you can use against her.  It would have been bad enough if they acted like healthcare was something which could have been withheld for some infraction or other, but they didn't even attempt to suggest there was an infraction and were looking to screw her over for the sheer petty retribution of it.

At any rate, it's important to this community to see her getting proper healthcare recognized as such.  It's also important to see the system pass on the opportunity to be simply vindictive.
When in doubt, ignore the moral judgments of anybody who engages in cannibalism.
