Question on hormones

I've read that if hormones are kind to you generally overtime you may look similar to your brother or sister depending on which you're going for but I'm wondering how true this has been for any of you and if so did you have a pretty close resemblance to them in the first place?

Also I'm wondering based on my face is it a bit late to get any good results?

I don't think I'm exactly a fountain of manliness but do you suppose the facial structure might be a blocking point for me? I'm not particularly tall about 5 feet 6 inches and pretty thin but I'm worried the face may be a problem I'm also only 23 so would I need a miracle to get somewhere with my face?

Thanks for the help.

First off. Welcome to Susan's.
Secondly, it depends on when you start on hormones because many of the features that resulted from testosterone can't be undone by HRT alone. They soften a bit, but won't likely go away all together. Genetics is another big factor. I look very similar to my sister, but my being intersexed to agree may or may not have played a role in that because that similarity was there before HRT. Regardless everyone's millage on HRT will differ.

Greetings kamitaron and welcome to Susan's.

My only brother died when he was a babe so I can't answer the first part of your question.  I do know that my sisters look nothing alike.

As to being too late for good results, you are far from it. Some excellent results are in older people who look nothing like their pre-HRT days. For example, check out Jill F's avatar.

I am giving you some links to site rules and some answers to often asked questions.

No sisters here.  Closest female relative to me is my mother.  Looking like her would be very creepy.  (Sorry mom.)  But yes, you may end up bearing more than a passing resemblance to a sibling of the opposite gender once you transition.

No.  You've got a good starting point.  My theory on transitioning is that you generally get out of it what you put in.  HRT is important and will get you most of the way there, but it also takes hard work in terms of the "superficialities" such as makeup and mannerisms, sometimes facial surgery (which falls under the "throwing lots of money at the problem" category), and often a healthy dose of good luck.  Genetics is just one of many factors that govern how a transition will progress.  Effort, money, good fortune, and the passage of time all play a role - some we can control, others we can't.

23 and feeling it is a bit late? Wow, what I wouldn't do to trade spots with you. I started at 43.
You'll do fine.

For me, I can see some resemblance in the softening of my face, but of course we're really different.   Think about how different cisgender sisters normally look.  You might share some similarities like hair color, eyes and your smile, etc., but I'm not sure you can expect to look too similar.

The chromosomes that each siblings gets from their parents are actually a random 50% (unless you're identical twins), like this:

So, you are different from your sister, and you may have some surprises (some good, maybe some not) when you transition. :)

From what I see there I think you should have good results.  You are quite lucky actually for your starting point, your height not being unusually tall and especially for being able to do this at such an early age.  (I started at 36.)  I'd have a better idea of your concerns if you posted a side-profile photo.  As I see it now you may not need FFS at all or maybe minor work if anything really bothers you personally.

People always told me I looked a lot like my mother.  Interestingly, she has more of a square jaw than I do, so I feel my jawline is fine without any surgery.  My siblings are brothers and they definitely look more like my dad.  After more than a year on HRT I don't think I look more like my mother than I did, only more female.  I look so youthful, even more so now, it's getting hard to compare against her aging skin anyway.

One thing that occurred to me recently is that my face wasn't very strongly male to begin with so I can't expect large changes, even via surgery.  It's messing with my brain because I seem to subconsciously need to see a certain amount of difference in the mirror before my mind can fully grasp and believe that I've transitioned.  I'm just saying to be prepared for that feeling since you are not strongly male now either.  A number of people have reacted with confusion when I've told them about my desire for FFS because they don't see strong features in the bone of my face.  You may run into this reaction as well - if you feel that FFS is needed to set your own mind right don't let anyone stop you but keep in mind you shouldn't need major work.  Others may end up surprised how a little can go a long way.  If you must make change in order to believe it yourself then you are welcome to do so if you can afford it.

You look like you have a good starting point! You have soft features and big eyes, and that will help.

I ended up looking quite a lot like my sister, to the point that my wife occasionally sees a picture of her on Facebook and thinks it's me at first. :) However, my sister's super short and definitely has less "defined" features than I do.

I'm going with Cynthia on this one...you're going to do well.

Me?  I have a half-sister that I resemble reasonably well.  I also had facial feminization surgery (FFS) to help things along..

Welcome to Susan's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hugs,

Jennifer
To move forward is to leave behind that which has become dear. It is a call into the wild, into becoming someone currently unknown to us. For most, it is a call too frightening and too challenging to heed. For some, it is a call to be more than we were capable of being, both now and in the future.

I agree with the others that if you decide to go on HRT, you will do well. None of your features seem strong or too masculine to me, but even people who have some features like that notice that they become less of an issue on HRT. I started at age 28, and by that point in my life, I don't think anyone would have looked at me and thought "I think that's a woman". In fact, I was terrified to start transitioning, because I couldn't imagine how I could possibly ever pass or even look half decent. At this point, I need some makeup and hair styling to be accepted as female, but people get the message quickly. I had about 20 strangers address me by female pronouns today alone, and I started off in a much worse place than you are.

As for looking like your sisters, it varies. If I had started transitioning around your age, my sister and I might look pretty similar. Starting at the age I did, we look fairly different because of all of the changes testosterone made to my bone structure during my 20's. I probably look like my sister would look if she had experienced a lot of testosterone for a few years, then went back to her old hormones. Maybe someday in our 40's, my sister and I will look a lot alike. Starting at your age, you'll either look like you were assigned female at birth (which with your features is very possible), or on the off chance that you don't end up looking totally passable on just hormones and laser, you'll still look good in women's clothing and not stand out in a bad way while living life more comfortably.

I'm pretty close to my sister face wise only real noticeable difference is she has cheeks and I have a bigger nose. Lots of this is great to know I thought I may of been more far into the manly side to get some results but own worst critic I suppose. Hopefully pellets and genes decide to play nicely together for me. Thanks for all the answers it really helped lots.
