this is kinda embarrassing to talk about but i don't really know how to deal with it, so i'll just post online about it hoping that others can relate. i sorta kinda have bad hygiene down under bc of dysphoria. i barely ever shave and tbh i have a bad odor. i also have a lot of unessecary discharge.  :embarrassed: the odor and discharge make my dysphoria even worse and i know that if i take steps to get rid of it, it's going to make me feel even worse. can anyone relate and does anyone know what to do about this  :embarrassed: i just dont wanna live with this

shaving your nethers isn't obligatory, and has very little to do with odor. What is important is keeping yourself clean, via bathing, making sure to dry off properly after, and also after bathroom visits, and wearing clean underwear.

make sure you rinse the area and pat yourself dry properly. I understand that touching the area is unpleasant due to dysphoria, but you don't want to get some kind of fungus infection down there from not drying off. Only use mild soaps, or you'll start to itch.
Some odor is natural, though, so that may just be how that smells for you.
Also (and I'm mentioning this cause my niece didn't know this and thought she wasn't being clean enough) that area is acidic enough to bleach dark underwear, which is perfectly normal and not an indication that something is wrong.

If you don't want to touch with a wash cloth you could try getting a scrubby on a stick. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51smCV2OTfL._SY355_.jpg

Might help you a bit.

And what Alex said you need to wipe your butt after every toilet visit and wear clean clothes.

Its possible the odor comes from something you might want to get checked out with a doctor. This might trigger alot of dysforia but if the discharge has a really really bad odor and has a color it shouldn't have (greenish or something) then that might be an indication that something like fungus might be going on. If that's not the issue then I can just offer advice on personal experience which is when you wash yourself just use water there's no need for soap and sort of "spread" the outer lips or your legs and then use the shower hose and wash the area with that around on everything, 20-30 seconds is enough. If you do it that way there's no need to be touching everything. And if you don't like shaving but still want to keep it trimmed to make yourself feel more clean then buy an electric trimmer that is water proof so you can use it in the shower. Then you can just trim a couple of times to get the hair a little shorter and that's out of the way.

When you take a bath make sure to take a shower after the bath because taking a bath wont do it because that basically makes you lay around in dirty water and that doesn't help if you don't rinse it off afterwards.

The whole notion of shaving the pubes, I will assure you is a very recent idea (I mean VERY recent, and in my understanding more of a sexual/sensual thing). Not required for hygiene and very little to do with smell. It's possible you have an infection, but if not then it's likely you just aren't washing well enough.Infections aren't necessarily green ones. The secretions could just be heavy and white or foamy.

Embarrassing as it might be, can you tell us whether the odor is from the female anatomy that is left or from the phallus?

If the odor and discharge is from the female anatomy that is left, yeast comes to mind. If the odor is from the phallus, if you haven't had a urinary hookup done, the hollow tube running the length of the phallus needs to be cleaned out. If you are urinating from the phallus, it is self cleaning, but if not, dead skin cells and possibly sweat is going to build up. You can use a long q-tip with soap to clean the inside, then make sure to rinse it well either by running water through with a shower head or with an over the counter syringe. Make sure to dry it with a q-tip afterwards.

Either way, if you are taking regular showers and are having discharge you think shouldn't be there, ask your Dr.  Its not worth risking an infection.

Not sure why you are assuming he's had bottom surgery when he doesn't mention it in his post or any posts that I looked at of his.

OP if you are having more discharge than normal and the odor is different or stronger than normal I'd consider a trip to the doctor, as embarrassing as it might be.  It could be an infection of some sort.  Have you noticed any other changes?  Pain when you urinate, itchiness?  Anything that isn't typical for you?

And what everyone else said, shaving has nothing to do with hygiene of the area.

I'm not assuming anything. Just trying to cover all bases for him.

Also remember when you're washing that you don't want to get soap up in there/too close to the plumbing. Just water and gentle friction. My recommendation would be to consciously wash twice a day this week, and try a probiotic and cranberry capsules. If this combination doesn't help at all, you may have something that will require medicine to correct.

Just as a thought to help you with this OP, the smeel - if normal - is worsening your dysphoria aswell, as you said. So which is worse for your dysphoria? Cleaning the area or smelling the smell? It's a choice between the lesser of two evils and I bet washing won't be as consistently dysphoria enducing as the smell could be.

And if it's an abnormal smell that needs medical attention, the hygeine issue certainly hasn't been of help to you. :( My suggestion is to get a very mild soap to wash away the smell stuck in the pubes for a one time deal, then follow the suggestions from the other guys. I use a scrubby on a stick for my back and it's definitely a blessing to have for that, so it would be of great use for avoiding touching!

In any case, I hope you can manage to get through this one! We are here for you, just don't ask us to take a shower with you...  >:-)

Everyone has a different body odor and levels of secretions, so please keep that in mind.

However, as others have said, your body may be very upsetting but proper hygiene is important. I'm not fond of washing down there either, but I do every day. I work with preschool students and I can say that even the slightest amount of foreign bacteria can through the whole system out of whack. If you have itching, burning and heavy discharge it could be something like a yeast infection. While doctor's visits for these kinds of things are not pleasant, they are necessary. You only have one body and keeping it healthy is very important, even the parts we'd rather not have. If you don't suspect an infection then you may need to change the soap you are using or the way you wash. Sponges on a stick for some, I use a very gentle loofah and a soap for sensitive skin. Make sure you rinse thoroughly and pat the skin dry.

Another thing I want to mention, as I work with kids, is the way you wipe can irritate. Always go front to back, never back to front, otherwise bacteria can get pushed forward and aggravate your system.

Warning, incoming novel that includes things you don't want to read.
But are kind of necessary to fixing this issue in my honest opinion.

(Noting of course, you may experience this because of natural body chemistry, I'm going off the assumption that this is not normal for YOU. Because you're here questioning it.)
I'm going to be "That guy" and tell you to see an OB/GYN. (Most family doctors will tell you the moment you say "privates, plumbing, personal parts, down there, or NETHER REGION" to go see one anyway, so you might save yourself or your parents money by just directly requesting one. Note I don't know how old you are, so the yourself/parents thing is heavily depending on situation.)

It might be a bacterial infection (Which is VERY common in the original plumbing for us guys. Some are lucky enough to never deal with it, but literally /anything/ can throw it out of whack and become an ordeal.) which can result in bad smells, discharge, but it does NOT result in pain normally. Which is one of the big differences between bacterial issues, and fungal issues.

Now, for me? I had an issue like this years ago, where it got bad because I didn't see a doctor. I tried all the internet home remedies. I tried the vinegar, I tried the yogurt, I tried the aggressive soap scrubbing, everything. Didn't work.

Because vinegar, yogurt, and soap all have two things in common.
1. They screw up the plumbing's PH. Either making it too high, or too low. Which means it's balance is effected, it's GOOD protective bacteria is dying, and it has to work to fix that.
2. They contain bacteria. The wrong kinds of bacteria. Which only adds to the problem, or lessens it for a VERY short time before it becomes just as bad. Hell, these new bacteria might even kill the protective bacteria that are left, fighting these goddamn foreign invaders. It's like a staph infection on your skin.

Now the thing that fixed it?
I saw my Ob/Gyn, he asked what the problems were, I told him the exact symptoms, told him there were key things missing from a fungal episode, and he prescribed me an antibiotic (One which apparently is used especially for this issue.) and then within the week and a half it took to take the pills, everything was 100% in that plumbing, and it has been for years after.

As horrific as it sounds walking into a place where there's a bunch of ladies staring at you, trust me on the fact that you need to take care of yourself first. (I was shaking and horrified and just so upset because of my dysphoria. But the staff was very friendly, very supportive, and I was texting a friend through the whole ordeal and it really helped me.)

And if you're worried about how the office will treat you, call ahead, ask them their trans policies, ask if any of their doctors are experienced working with transmen, and pick an office from there. Many are becoming quite used to us guys, and as medical professionals do what they can to use our preferred pronouns and names. I hadn't picked out a name at the time, so they just used my birth one, but I did tell them that I preferred non-female terminology, and my doctor was happy to oblige. He also said a lot of ciswomen prefer not to hear it as well, so I imagine it's a common request! :)
And the staff was fantastic, just like my doctor; I told him I was /not/ comfortable with an examination at that time, for a multitude of reasons including the fact that I had bad gender dysphoria, so he nodded, asked a few more in depth questions to make sure he could go on the fact that without seeing it/testing it first hand it WAS that, sent me for a piss test, and then within 30 minutes when the result came back he prescribed my miracle cure, and that was it.

Please, for your sake try to give these doctors a chance. I know the dysphoria hurts, I know the reminder is depressing, but once it's all over with you wont have to think about it, because the fix will let you take all of these other fantastic guy's suggestions like the stick loofas, and such to heart so you can rest easy knowing that the hygiene is taken care of, and there wont be really any other problems for a while.

Also, one super important note.
Once you've fixed this problem
ONCE IT IS GONE.
Do NOT, under any circumstances put soap /inside/ this plumbing. When you wash, wash the skin outside, dear gods in the pantheon DO NOT PUT SOAP INSIDE. It will do what I said up there in this novel long post, and screw up the PH, killing the protective stuff and leaving you vulnerable to bad bacteria for a while.
Washing around the outside is fantastic, and keeps staph (Skin) bacteria from hurting that area. (Since you know...it's all dark and sweaty and gross down there.)

ANYWAY OK I'M DONE. Good luck, hope you get this fixed one way or another man. <3
