I had my first session with a psychologist a few days ago. Overall it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. About half the time I was talking about my background and the other half was spent talking about why I feel the way I do, why I'm not sure whether or not I am fully male, what do I think made me question my gender, why at this point in my life am I starting to care about my gender, and so on. I understand this is only my first session but it didn't really address my confusion or my dyphoria about being considered female. Has anyone else had this experience?

Congratulations on starting! That's a huge first step, and I don't think it's ever easy. What you describe sounds completely normal. It can take quite a while before one feels like one's concerns are being "addressed."

There's a lot of work which has to be done first: you have to get to know each other and establish some trust, the therapist has to learn something about who you are and how to work with you, etc. With the right therapist, this can go pretty fast, or it can take longer even with a great therapist: before I connected with my current therapist, I was seeing someone who was just starting out in the field, and it took me about two months just to decide that I wasn't going to fire him for being too young and inexperienced. But as we got to know each other, I realized that he was a perfect fit for where I was at that point in my life, and he ended up helping me more than I can say.
