While I don't know much about the smaller businesses, I know larger companies such as Google, Microsoft, Intel, etc. tend to have support in at least the form of policies to support and protect transgender individuals, and in the case of one I applied for an internship for, they seemed to actively support finding jobs for transgender individuals, and I also know of a trans woman (friend of a friend) who is hired to do backend programming.
However, I do have to agree that schoolwork is the more important at this point. If your school has a co-op program, they should be able to help you find other areas that are supportive, but in any case, there used to be a resource I had that showed employers that at least had policies that were transgender-friendly. I'll have to look for that again.
