I hope this turns out not to be the case, but it's a common scam targeting women to impersonate a service person and act as if they're interested in dating us.

Yes. I suspect it. I sometimes get similar invitations in the internet or Facebook, but I always ignore them.

barbie~~
Just do it.

I just got an email back from him and he says he doesn't care that I'm transgender, now I just have to find out if he's really a General

Since you've determined that he's not an active 4 or 5 star general in the US Army, you can try putting various combinations of abbreviations of the other general ranks (BG,MG, and LTG) and his last name into google and see what pops up.  If you can find his location or command out through conversation, that would be even better.  Just to double check, did he specify that he is an active general in the US Army and not some other country's army?  Like Nigeria?  ;)

I was searching through the pictures of active generals and guess who I found under a different name with just a little grayer hair.

I've met a few generals in my day and they are very calculated in everything they do. They don't volunteer information. The very fact that he mentioned that he's a general makes me think he's not. If he were really a general, I'd expect the introduction to most likely not even include the fact that he's in the military. He'd probably mention that if an in person relationship were to start, but I'd also expect him to not tell you his rank unless you pried.
