I know there are some folks here who've needed inpatient mental health care at some point, and some have real horror stories.  A member of my social circle recently had a horror story of her own in an inpatient unit.  It got me wondering, both in case she ever needs inpatient again, and for general reference-- are there any psychiatric inpatient facilities that get it right?  No need to go into detail, but does anyone know of hospitals where they're at least respectful to trans folks?  Even better, anyone know any hospitals where the experience is genuinely therapeutic?  My friend is in New York City, and I've got to believe that at least one of the dozens of hospitals there would get it right.

Anyway, apologies if this is a bad question, or in the wrong place, but I'm interested to hear people's responses.  If you've got thoughts but don't want to post here, you can PM me, too.

What sorts of inpatient psych. facilities?  My pre-transition girlfriend came out to many staff members at Rosewood Centers for Eating Disorders (their inpatient/residential site is a fully licensed hospital) in Wickenburg, AZ, and she thinks everyone she told seems cool with it.  She told me about a trans guy who came out to everyone and again, she thinks the news was well received.

I was primarily looking for acute inpatient care for mood disorders-- my friend struggles with depression and suicidality.  When she went inpatient, they wouldn't give her her estrogen or spiro, messed up some of her other meds (just got it wrong, it wasn't a deliberate change) and they persistantly misgendered her. She felt that she was unsafe and receiving poor care.  If she needs hospitalization again, which she likely will at some point, she'll be admitted from an emergency room in NYC, which limits her options.  But I also have contacts other places, and this is an issue that has come up before, so I was interested in other locations/services as well.

Thanks for the info, I'll keep it in mind.

Small update-my GF recently switched from the residential site to the PHP site, and the staff there (her counselor only so far to my knowledge) respects her gender identity there too.  I talked to her new counselor this morning.
