Astrid Munn, a criminal defense attorney with the law firm Seddiq Law, told Mashable that she represents the 30-year-old protester, who has identified as a woman since she was 14.

Munn, who didn't want to name the woman out of concern for her safety, said police initially booked her client as a woman but that when her client was transferred to Baltimore's central booking facilities, officials discovered she had been assigned male at birth. Officials then forced the woman to remove her bra and hand it over to officials, and she was forced to wear the semi-transparent shirt that reveals the outline of her nipples, the lawyer said.

"It's been hell for her," Astrid Munn, the lawyer representing Venable, told Mashable. "She asked to have the 'she' pronoun, but the commissioner refused."

The woman's bail was originally set at $75,000, though she was charged with fourth-degree burglary, a misdemeanor. Her bail was later bumped up to $100,000. She works in a salon earning around $300 per week and is on public assistance.

She was initially booked as a woman until officials inspected her identification, which revealed that she was born a male.

Intake guards then took away her bra, gave her a sheer top and placed her in a small holding cell with several men.

If a cisgender woman had been given placed braless with a flimsy top in a cell full of males, it would be sexual assault.

I really hope our community finds a voice to condemn this fiercely. I've shown this to some of my cisgender friends who don't seem to understand what the big deal is.

I ran into someone who thinks that until genital surgery is done, they should be placed with people with the gender they were assigned at birth. I felt crushed by that. I am trying to help them understand what it is like to be seen as someone they are not but so for,, moderate success.
