I'm a 20 year old mtf that has been taking estradiol and spironolactone for 10 months now. A couple months ago I began to lose my sexual functionality more and more. Now it is a complete struggle just to have an erection.

My endocrinologist is a three hour drive away and I can't afford to see them and don't know what to do.

Does anyone have advice on how I could help my erectile dysfunction?

Its perfectly normal. I'm surprised you weren't aware of this possibility. My Endo made it very clear it was a possibility. Its possible that Viagra may help. You'll have to bring it up with your doctor though. Personally I think you're lucky. I still have them sometimes by choice and sometimes not. Fortunately its much less frequent that before.

Hi Jane, welcome to Susan's. It's completely normal considering you have been on HRT for 10 months. You could always call your endo's office and see what they say. They may have some ideas as to what you can do. I look forward to seeing you around the site. Good luck and Hugs.

Hugs... I am sorry to say, but being on E will cause loss of these functions, you would need to see your Endo to see if at this stage there is any chance of reversing it, getting blood work done will determine the levels of Testosterone in your system, he may then be able to help you.

Sorry for you and that you may not have been made fully aware of the changes that would ensue from starting HRT

Dr John O'Dea of Marina Del Rey, California claims to be able to custom tailor hormones to preserve male sexual function or lose it as desired.  He's not cheap though.

Typically estrogen will make your body female and that means no erections and genitals shrinking to almost nothing.

Part of being on estrogen and anti androgens means usually losing erectile function/libido/sperm production, etc...

There are pharmaceuticals designed for ED but I'd be extremely cautious about taking them without checking first with your endo.

I do wish people would stop assuming that HRT will kill libido and sexual function - my gyno made it quite clear it was a maybe. As does other research I've done. Also, not all of us hate our genitals enough that we don't enjoy still using them.

I found Cialis worked for me, but I did consult with my doctor on that one. I've also found that I require considerably more "warm up" than I used to, you know, kinda like a woman.. ;)

As kelly said the ability to gain and maintain an erection varies, but very commonly there is a loss of erectile function following prolonged HRT.

That said a good endocrinologist should be able to tailor your regime to help you.

I am very surprised that your Dr didn't warn you that loss of erectile function is a common side effect of HRT. Did your Dr warn you of other possible side effects?

DVT, feminisation, mood changes, etc?

When I was going to have relations I use to take Cialis and it really helped.

I hope you're able to find a quick solution, Jane. I know how panicky I would get if this happened to me. :(

I think the statistics are high enough that any new HRT patient should be aware that there is a strong possibility. It hasn't happened to me...yet.

I appreciate all the comments and suggestions. I'm so scared and don't know what I can do about this that wouldn't be a long investment in time or money.

I need an erection for my job. Without this I'm screwed. Nobody will hire a transgender woman in Tennessee. I need a solution to this. It's effecting me financially and through my dating life

I'm amazed that you are surprised, it's as if you didn't do any research, or have any guidance before you started HRT.

I lost the ability to get hard within 2 months of low dose E. I've heard of MTFs on it for years and still getting it all the way up and even impregnating their SOs... So yes it does vary a lot. In my case I was already borderline infertile and E just finished the job.
