In these classrooms may be the silent 9-year-old girl whose drug-addicted mother abandoned her and her three siblings when their father was hospitalized, leaving them, without birth certificates or Social Security cards, in the surprised lap of an aunt. In an upper grade may sit the young girl struggling with gender identity who presents herself as a boy with a crewcut.
