The reaction I've gotten from my "friends" has been nothing short of atrocious. They told me I need help, I'm "sick in the head" and other stuff.

Problem for them is that I already do get help and transition is the only thing that has made me better.

Most of the time the one that say this are the miserable ones. Here we are being happier with being our true selves and they just don't see it. The reason is usually because they are miserable with their own life and redirecting it to something to something else.
