After years of debate and months of discussion, Stanford has become one of California's first private universities to add transgender students to the groups covered by its anti-discrimination policy.

That puts Stanford University on a par with all the Ivy League schools, which forbid discrimination based on "gender identity," along with race, sex, religion, disability and sexual orientation, among other traits.
