"Free Pride Glasgow is concerned drag would make trans identity look like a 'joke'"

What a load of jibber jabber. Someone needs to tell them Drag is a transgender identity and part of the community.

I don't know, Devlyn. I can see their point. They're not banning cross dressing. They're just not scheduling drag acts, right? If I understand correctly, crossdressing is a TG identity whereas drag is a type of dress and performance. Did I get that wrong?

I can see the point of view that cis people doing a drag act would be seen as offensive in the same way the black community is offended by "blackface".

I think you did get it wrong, I use this as words to live by.

Community Definitions:

Transgender: an inclusive umbrella term which covers anyone who transcends their birth gender for any reason. This includes but is not limited to Androgynes, Crossdressers, Drag kings, Drag queens, Intersexuals, Transsexuals, and Transvestites.

Just my view, though, I'm not asking anyone to see things how I do.

I talked last year with a guy who had a regular drag gig.  He completely rejected the transgender label and said he was just a "->-bleeped-<- in drag".  If you like the label, by all means apply it to yourself.  If not, then that's fine too.

I believe in choosing your own descriptors and not having unwanted ones applied to you by others.  If you don't ID as transgender, then I'm not going to insist otherwise.

You're right. Thanks.

Its sad that they are willing to alienate members of the lgbt community over sensitive egos. I'm not offended by those that do drag, it doesn't reflect on my identity at all.

There are, however, more than a few drag acts that are transphobic.. Ru Paul, as a well known example.

Drag is definitely not a gender identity, it's a performance style. If the community definitions have it as gender identity, that's a mistake. Do you see any drag queens here, asking for support for being drag queens? Most drag queens are cis gay males, who are pretty confident of that. Ask any drag queen instead of trying to define them from the outside.

I have mixed feelings about drag queens. After all it is a caricature of feminine stereotypes. I see it more as misogynistic than transphobic. How is it different from blackface?

But... Where does this leave the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence? I love them and admire their work!

This thread has run its course and has several TOS violations in it. I will remind people of TOS 9:
9. If you disapprove of people who are Transgender, Gay, Lesbian, or Bisexual; or activities which cross gender boundaries; take your arguments to a more appropriate website.

And 10: Bashing or flaming of an individual or group is not acceptable behavior on this website and will not be tolerated in the slightest for any reason.  This includes but is not limited to:

Advocating the separation or exclusion of one or more group from under the Transgender umbrella term
Suggesting or claiming that one segment or sub-segment of our community is more or less legitimate, deserving, or real than any others
Posting any messages that engages in personal attacks and/or is actively or passively aggressive no matter the provocation.
