Hi,

I am Crystal.  I have a 12 year old child, Rory, who identifies as agender and pansexual.   We had generally been unhappy with their pediatrician before they were out to us, and were starting to review other doctors.  Now that they are out, we'd like to make sure that the doctor we choose is one that won't be critical or misgender them during appointments.  I was wondering if anyone here knows of any doctors (preferably in the Kaiser network) that other people have had success with?

In the same vein, even though they seem to be doing overall ok right now, it is probably a good plan to have some counseling in place. They're moving into middle school next year, and middle school was brutal for me even as a completely cis-gendered, straight kid.  I can only imagine that it has the potential to be even more brutal without those advantages.  They feel anxious and I feel like I need to help them prepare, but I'm not quite sure where to start. They're going to a youth support group, and it has been tremendously helpful.  What is a good start for weeding out whether a therapist is going to help deal with the actual problems (anxiety, depression, etc) they are experiencing without seeing their gender and sexuality as the "problem" that has to be fixed.

Thank you so much for your time!

I am a Kaiser member in the Sacramento area. They have several gender therapists on their staff in the area, you can contact their mental health department. I don't think you need a referral  to see someone.  All you should have to do when you see your child's primary care physician is tell them how your child feels and how they would like to be addressed they will even call them by the name of their choice when calling you in from the lobby for appointments. If you or your child do not like their pediatrician it is very easy to change doctors with in their system. Kaiser policy is to be committed to LGBT health issues and so far I have had no trouble with them.

I'm also a Kaiser member in the central valley. For me personally I called the mental health appointment line and asked if there was anyone who was well versed in transgendered mental health and that's how I found mine who is fantastic I might add and as Stevie about me said Kaiser has been a dream for me six months in especially about referring to me by my chosen name before it was my legal name.
