Illinois today became the fourth state to outlaw the use of so-called conversion therapy on minors.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a bill into law that bars licensed therapists from subjecting young people to counseling that is designed to change their sexual orientation or gender identity, reports the bill's sponsor, Rep. Kelly Cassidy, in a press release. The state Senate and House of Representatives both approved the measure in May. The law goes into effect January 1.

The AP Reports Gov. Bruce Rauner has signed a bill banning therapists from trying to change a young person's sexuality.

The Republican governer signed into law HB0217 "YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH PROTECTION" on Thursday. His office didn't immediately offer a statement.

The measure keeps therapists from trying to change the sexual orientation or gender identity of a person younger than 18. Providers who don't comply could face disciplinary action.

Just for the record, Governor Rauner is a Republican. While not a fan of SS Marriage, he has also stated he would do nothing to fight it as it is the law of the land. But his signing the bill is hope that other recalcitrant lawmakers can be reached by giving them the facts. The fact is Gender Identity seems to be in-born and NOT A CHOICE. Hopefully people are beginning to understand this and perhaps through education discrimination can be diminished. (A girl can dream, can't she?)

Now if we could only get this passed banning conversion therapy for Everyone!

Chris Christie is a Republican and also signed a conversion therapy ban in NJ. IT's really no harm for them to pass and sign those laws and they will come around. Just need to not let up and not let partisanship stand in the way.

And from what I understand, this "conversion therapy" consisted of making the kids watch lots of pornography. That's pretty barbaric if you ask me.

I'm glad he finally signed it.  It's been on his desk all summer.  Took him long enough.

Thanks for posting that, Traci
