I began reading and studying herbs, spices, foods containing phyto-estrogens (1981). I took classes conducted by professional practising herbalists. I spoke and consulted with experts. I asked questions. I learned the pro and con to each item before trying it. I learned what worked and what did not work to my personal body chemistry.
Different items have different issues and different levels of effectiveness and side-effects. Yes - use caution with any item you choose - some can have serious consequences, some might very well be useless to your body chemistry.
I have experienced periods when I was off ERT for times between endocrinologists due to moving to a new geographical location, changing doctors, un-employed and lack of funds to pay for medical appointments.
My phyto-e choices proved quite effective. I was recently off meds approximately 13 months and went on phyto-e as an alternative. When I resumed my medical appointments, my first estrogen lab results were within 'low normal' before resuming ERT. My endo resumed ERT and I went off phyto-e; my latest estrogen lab results are slightly higher and within 'normal'. This is strictly my experience and may not be for anyone else.
Here's to repeat the caveat - consult with a professional and know what you are doing. Agreed, it is best to work with your practising physician. Always reveal and discuss all your consumables, even something apparently innocuous as a daily vitamin pill - those, too can have consequences in your over-all health. You doctor asks you about these at your appointments for this reason. This is your life at stake and there can be times when you are better to do nothing than risk everything.
