so after taking a two year break from school i've decided to go back. i will be out to my classmates and teachers but im trying to get around telling my mom for now. could i have the guidance counselor/principal/whoever is there email my teachers before school starts on the first day i go and tell them my preferred name and stuff or do i have to do it at the time of registration? any other suggestions on what i should do would be appreciated.

(coming out to my mom now is something i can do but it's not something i want to do right now. but if thats something i have to do before i start school i will do it.)

Well talking to the counselor could be a good idea...
they could help and maybe other people have done this before so they could give some advice...

As difficult as it is likely to be, I really wonder whether you shouldn't be having that all-important conversation with your mum before speaking with school officials.  I know a lot of school policies have changed since I was in high school, but I would think involvement of parents in school matters is still in place.  Think how your mum will feel and you will feel, if the head master or counselor calls your mum to discuss the steps they have taken to accommodate your transition.

I don't have the answers.  Take everything I have written as well-intentioned but quite likely faulty guesswork on my part.  However, this scenario was the first thing that came to mind as a possible outcome.

Have a great school term.

There are some things that you just have to do for yourself. Having been in a similar situation, I went to the administration, told them that I was going through transition and needed to opt out of gym. At the time, I was starting at a community college and gym was required.

You need to have your name legally changed and as soon as you can, have your gender legally changed. Go through an attorney to make sure that everything is legal and correct. Once you do that, you can have your social security changed, your driver's license and every other paper work changed. It sounds like a major pain in the butt, but it saves a tremendous amount of  explaining and having to get around the system just so you will be treated by your preferred gender.

My Driver's license was the easiest. Once I had the name change and social security, I just walked into the DMV, told them that the gender on the license was an error and could they please change it. No questions were asked.

I think you will find life easier if you get these changes. What the requirement for being legally male or female can vary from state to state, so you will need to find out what your state requires. Any official changes that require paperwork are things you need to save, forever. If you need to use them, you will need the originals and just copies won't be accepted.

I'm glad you are returning to school. Getting a degree is more important now than ever. The job market is very competitive and a degree gives you an edge.

sam1234, I still needed two P.E. classes after I started living as a guy.  I took golf for one where no changing was required and no problem whatsoever.  Still need to find one more like that.
