Ive been taking Avodart for the last 7 months or so, because of male pattern baldness on my crown.

I have seen some definite improvement on top of my head and the hair is regrowing, though there is a thin patch which is visible.  The thin patch is about 3 - 4 cm across and causes me great distress.  I am hoping that in the coming months that the patch will slowly disappear.

When you ladies started HRT did any hair on the crown regrow?

I'm not sure when I will start hormones but hopefully by Christmas time.  Im kind of looking forward to seeing if this improves the hair on my head.

If the hair situation doesnt improve,  if I get FFS I will also have hair advancement and hair transplant from the back of my head.

Going back to the Avodart, strangely enough I have lost weight since using it.  I used to be 78kg now I am 72kg.  Nothing too dramatic but I'm sure my muscles on my stomach are disappearing since I started taking this medication.

The chest area is also getting bigger on the Avodart.  Before I had mild gynecomastia but now i can definitely feel that the chest is getting  bigger.  Nothing overtly female yet but still it is a start.  Also Im pretty sure my complexion has changed too with my skin clearer.  Im sure my colleagues notice a different with my longer hair and small manboobs LOL

Im sure if I start HRT my chest is going to explode in size LOL  :D

I am 2.5 weeks into starting HRT (estrogen and antiandrogens), and I have been using a Biotin based Shampoo (from OGX) for over a month. As of now there is definite regrowth (and my hair is fuller), but still.hard to say how much it will be.

Hi Joanne,

I started Avodart in January so I guess it's been 9 months for me.  My hair seems to be slowly coming back but it was pretty bad before.  The individual hairs are definitely thicker, they use to be very thin.   I've read you have to give it time, at least a year or more.  I'm hoping but will probably need a hair transplant if I transition.  I'm also using 2% minoxidil and a dermaroller.  Hopefully that is helping too.

As for other effects, I notice my butt seems to be fuller and sways a bit when I walk.   My nipples seem a little bigger and stick out all the time.  They  tend to be erect more often and get hard under areolas when this happens.    I quite love these feeling by the way especially in the shower.  Also my breasts seem to be taking a more feminine shape.  I constantly massage them so that may have something to do with it too.

I didn't lose weight I actually have gained some.   I have gone from 170lb to about 180lb, but except for the butt and breasts it doesn't seem like fat.  Since Avodart reduces DHT, it actually is suppose to increase regular testosterone by about 10% which contributes to muscle growth.  This may explain the muscle increase and weight gain.

Not sure where this will go but very interesting.  I haven't started HRT yet, curious to hear the responses to your question.

Thanks for starting this thread,
Paige :)

I've read that too. I also read that some of the extra testosterone might be converted to estradiol because it can't convert to DHT with finasteride/dutasteride present.

So, I guess I wouldn't be too surprised to hear that fin/dut have some feminising efects, which is good news as I just started finasteride. :)

Hi Sarah,

Interesting point that extra testosterone may convert to estradiol.  I never thought of that but it makes sense.  Men who take testosterone to bulk up  have this problem and they can produce DHT.

Good luck with the finasteride.

I had blood work results today the doctor said that my estrogen levels had doubled since the last blood test 6 months ago.  The Testosterone levels also doubled according to the results, Im guessing the DHT levels are flat(that wasnt tested i dot think).

As to the bigger butt - Im sure Im packing more fat down there and on my chest too.

Hi Joanne,

Did you request the blood tests or did your doctor recommend them?  I've never had blood test, my doctor just put me on Avodart.

Thanks,
Paige :)

The psychiatrist ordered them, presumably to see if there are any abnormalities present prior to HRT.

He was pretty thorough and even picked up high cholesterol levels, so I am glad he ran the tests.

Hi Joanne,

Probably a good idea.  I should get them done as well.

Thanks,
Paige :)
