"Presidential wannabe Ted Cruz has branded trans people a "social experiment".

The Republican Presidential candidate made the comments at an Iowa campaign event, according to Washington Post, when asked about trans people serving in the military."

I am not a social experiment.  I am a human being.

You know what a social experiment is?  Trying to run for POTUS when you were born in Canada.

(It's OK, I wasn't ever going to vote for you anyway...)

Personally, I find attacks by presidential candidates on our authenticity quite scary. Fear is a powerful motivator and leaders have used it against a vulnerable populate it devastating effect. Look at Rwanda in the 1990s, Serbia, Nazi Germany, etc.  I am finding being in their crosshairs terrifying.

Fmr presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee has used the same words when discussing bathroom access. He did so after suggesting that if he had known saying you felt girly was all it took he would have done so in high school so he could commit sex crimes.

This is right wing language dodging. Not looking at the reality of a situation by rephrasing to dehumanize. If they can think of us as an experiment of the modern age they don't have to consider our feelings or the fact that we have always been part of the human story.

Democracy is a social experiment that never yields the best, or expected results.

I believe humanity is still moving forward though. And as we trans folk know, there are some things you can't return to. Once change has taken root there is no way to undo it short of armageddon. Something I know nasty "christians" "pray" for. They don't realized that they and their ideas are being left behind as we speak. They can have the past. I claim the future!

Even though their comments are frustrating and hurtful, this Airborne-Ranger-Infantry trans woman is amused whenever anyone who didn't serve a day in their life denigrates my and lots of others' service.

It is my opinion that the days of people with extreme, discriminatory positions in politics are numbered. I believe that mainstream America has begun to accept us and vitriolic rhetoric like some of these guys are spouting isn't selling that well anymore.

Judging by what I saw in the dem debates mainstream America is tired of arguments over the various divisions between us - they would much rather the politicians to focus on important everyday issues instead. Ignoring this obvious trend is done at the peril of the politician.

I was thinking the very same thing.

Any Republican who openly supports LGBT rights has no chance of winning a national election as things currently stand. If they do, they lose the Evangelical vote. To make up for the loss of Evangelical votes, they would need to pick up an equal or greater number of new votes. The problem is that most LGBT will vote Democrat regardless of how Pro-LGBT the Republican option is. So, they aren't going to pick up enough votes from the LGBT community to offset the loss of the Evangelical vote. The only way things are going to change is if the Evangelicals change or a large chunk of the electorate suddenly decide to stop voting the party line.

I've met a few of the aforementioned people and none of them viewed me as a social experiment. They viewed me as a woman, opening the door and all for me.

Funny how that works. I wonder what would have happened if they knew.

Agreed! The best experiments teach us things we didn't expect.

We never expect the best lessons.

I saw that piece when looking up the HERO proposal. Mr. Cruz wants to keep Cuba isolated. Social experiment? History shows that we never learned from social experiments after a time. What we learned from WWII is being forgotten or ignored as that generation who experienced that fades away.
