Silly question about sideburns

Maybe a stupid, or silly question, but I'm at a lost.  I've had sideburns all my life.  So far my wig hides them pretty good, but if I ever wanted to put my hair in a pony tail, they're exposed.  I know the easy route is to shave them up, but looking at the long term - eventually growing my hair out ... where's the ideal length you want to keep them at?  More importantly when I started going through permanent hair removal (laser or other options), how far do you go in the sideburn area, etc...

Any advice is greatly appreciated :)

Thanks in advance!

Looking at a lot of pictures it looks to be about 1/4 to 1/3 of the distance down from the top front of the ear.

I had lazer removal of my dark haired sideburns to the top of my ear and now let the wispy blond hairs get about 1-2 inches.  Having a few friends who are hairdressers means this is NOT a silly question and their opinions vary about what the Look should be depending on the overall style.

I'm not sure if it's different with other people, but with me at least there is a big difference to facial-hair, hairs and head-hair, hairs :p I shaved up until the coarse facial hair is remove, being very careful to go no further and retain the nice fine wispy head-hair :) I've been having laser and IPL for ages now, with most of my dark facial hair gone (just the annoying blonde stuff left :( ), this technique allows the lase tech to zap the facial hair right up to the facial/head transition zone :)
It should hopefully be quite easy to tell where your facial hair finishes and your head hair starts (there will prob be a bit of a mixed zone, but that's ok, just shave that and get rid of all traces of facial hair being the important bit), just feel for the difference in thickness of hair and texture, and make sure to take your time. I found once you establish the boundary, its easy to maintain if you push your wispy head hair up out of the way, it seems it much easier for the razor to shave the short, coarse facial hair compared to the long soft facial hair :)
Well that's how it worked for me at least. Good luck! :)

Thanks everyone for the pointers!

Do laser removal techs pretty knowledgable of know when and where facial hair starts and head hair begins in that area, or is it best to try and figure it out before hand and letting them know the general area?

That's pretty much what I'm doing.

When I was in denial, I let my sideburns grow out and styled them.  :eusa_doh: Anyways, your electrologist/laser tech well know pretty much where to stop as far as removing the sideburn hair. I've got a nice V tapered shape that ends in whispy, thin hairs where before I had the unruly porkchops.
