There's a growing body of research linking migraines to oestrogen and very much a brain-centred source for them. Migraines are around 3 to 4 x more prevalent in women. Some studies suggest they are actually triggered by a fall in oestrogen:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24792340But this is not necessarily at variance with the point that both the contraceptive pill and other forms of traditional MtF HRT therapy are known triggers of migraines in females
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3311830/For MtF's undergoing HRT this can present a serious problem and I'm not sure what the solution is?
I've had migraines for 20 yrs, long before starting any HRT. I know I have a naturally high level of oestrogen: I only need to take HRT for a few days and my nipples go crazy. But the biggest bane of my transition life are the aural migraines, which are just awful. There's no doubt whatsoever that these increase in frequency and intensity when I am on HRT.
Btw, anyone who directs me to a doctor, yep been there, done that and they don't have much clue. And, no, it's nothing else significant: I've had brain MRI's etc. This is oestrogen-related aural migraine.
I feel like this is a bit of a Catch-22 situation. It was one of the reasons I wanted to consider an orchiectomy but I now realise that won't actually stop the migraines because the oestrogen issue will still be in play.
Any thoughts, comments, advice, swapping of notes will be very gratefully received. xx
