So I guess I'm out at work now

I made the decision to update me FB profile picture while I was all done up.  I get a message from one coworker saying that another is sharing it with everyone else who doesn't know.  I know her and I don't even think she did it out of spite or ill feelings.  She probably just thought it was funny and wanted to share with people.  But she still didn't even bother to ask how I felt about it or anything.  But maybe that's just what I get for making it on facebook.

I guess now I just own it?

That's probably the best approach.  If you put it on Facebook, the whole world will know.

It's a shame when someone circulates a picture or outs a person without their consent. They probably think it's funny but they don't realize the potential harm it does to that person.

I suppose the only option left for you now is to speak with your HR person and see what type of damage control can be implemented. I realize you may not have been ready to transition at work but it looks like your co-worker has let the cat out of the bag. It will be hard of course but with help you can do it. Who knows, maybe it will be a good thing in the long run but that doesn't matter, the harm has been done now.

I would at least confront the person who did the posting and ask them why they did it and how would they feel if you had posted any embarrassing pictures of them for all to see. Maybe that will make them see what they have done?

Clare

I'd like to disagree with Clare, if I may.

None of what you suggested is "owning it." It's trying to backtrack. If BoringUser leans toward transsexual this could be the beginning a transition discussion. If not, it's photo from a Halloween party.

No offense to you, but I really hate Facebook. It was an awesome enough concept to make that Mark Zuckenberg guy his money or whatever, but for some reason most social media networks just irritate my soul. >.>
