I don't particularly have a plan for how/when to come out to people about being transgender.  I have made some small strides lately.  I came out to my wife immediately upon figuring it out.  Last week I told a good friend who lives across the country from me.  Tonight I came out to a friend of mine who I see a couple times a week.

No one has been mean or anything.  It's just hard because it leads to questions that I don't particularly want to answer.  The biggest is how do you know/why do you think that.  It was okay to talk about these things with my wife because she knows a lot of my secrets.  For the others it is hard because I am an intensely private person.  I don't present obvious clues as most all of it is internal strife.  I am not looking forward to telling my family.  That will not occur for a good long while.

How did everyone else handle the personal probing questions as to why?

When you come out, you need to tell enough of the story so they understand how you came to the decision but you need to tell only what you are comfortable with. I now understand that while I understood at age 13, I showed signs dating back to early childhood. When you think about it, you may also have something like that in your past that would fill out the storyline so they don't probe to deep into the moment of discovery. The more information you can provide them with, the less they will ask.
