So, I'm just a poor college student, not out to anyone about being trans yet, aside from my therapist. I haven't talked with a gender therapist yet, but I was curious, what can I do to "start" transition before I meet with the therapist and get on HRT. I mean, I'm already growing out my hair and shaving some of that nasty body hair I have, but what else can I do?  Limited budget would not allow me to do other forms of hair removal, since I'm trying to save up for my own car and be able to be self sufficient. Anything else you girls (or guys) can think of with someone in my situation?

As soon as you can afford it though get right onto that permanent beard removal.

Maybe look at what clothes you like and what you can afford and try to buy some. Ultimately though transition is not a cheap process. :(

Hair removal is a must. Takes forever so the sooner you start with facial hair removal the better. Secondly watch how other woman move about and what they where. What do woman where your age. What colors and styles are appropriate for your age and coloring. Woman tend to pay attention small details so pay attention tot he mannerisms and how they walk and move around. Hugs

What's your health, nutrition, and exercise like?  It couldn't hurt to be off to a good start in these areas too.

It doesn't cost anything to work on posture, most women do not slouch when they sit like guys do. Body language is as important as spoken word, people are very adept at picking up visual cues.

I would say my health is fairly good, nutrition could be a lot better (i'm super picky with food and it's hard for me to eat a lot of veggies). I'm fairly bad about exercising, I know i should do more.  with the weather getting better and nicer, i might start going for runs or walks.  I will say, I am very skinny, and it takes a lot for me to even gain weight.  I've only put on weight recently because of migraine prevention meds :P

Hopefully, once i'm done with school i can get a better paying job that will allow me to start on hair removal. thats a reachable goal within the next couple months.  I'll do my best to look out for proper posture and mannerisms, though i do have a hard time noticing subtle things the majority of the time.

Thank you all for your responses so far!

+1 on the face hair. Try and save a bit everytime you can. How much, that's not as important as the fact that you actually put it apart.

You can try to learn makeup. You're going to need to hide the 5 o'clock shadow anyway.

You can also work on your voice, get a more feminine resonance, raise your pitch.

The order I did things --

1. (1995) Came out to school counselor (unfortunately, he turned out to be an a**hole) and my parents
2. (1998) Went out in public (part time) as a woman.
3. (2005) Laser Consultation - Unfortunately, I couldn't afford it at the time.
4. (2014) Attended Support Group
5. (2014) Ears Pierced
6. (2015) Laser Hair Removal - Finally able to afford 6 sessions
7. (2015) Full-Time
8. (2015) Legal Name Change
9. (2015) Therapy
10. (2015) HRT
11. (2016) Gender Marker Change

Note that this list is not the usual order* and my first HRT Doctor would not write a letter for me to get my gender marker changed (she kept making excuses and/or saying maybe next time). Once I changed doctors, I was able to get the letter and get the marker changed.

*Around here, it seems most folks do HRT for a year or two before going Full-Time, but there is no rule saying that one has to. I was comfortable going full time after a few sessions of Laser.

Hi Angela.

What I'm doing at the moment is just underwear, deodorant, letting my hair grow out and washing it properly, seeing a therapist, working on my voice (totally free and fun), shaving what I can cover up and you can paint your toenails. I did a lot of research and found an affordable in home hair removal system because I do not have a lot of money either. Here is the link http://smile.amazon.com/BellaLite-By-Silkn-Professional-Removal/dp/B004QDO5OY?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_sfl_title_4&smid=A367YBEX25WJNQ if you have a prime account its the cheapest.

I was already sitting down when I used the bathroom even at bootcamp xD for the Navy. I would invest in a sewing machine so you can recycle pants and shirts. I found a lot of cute clothes on pinterest and youtube that were all modified guys clothes. Ebay and amazon has some really cheap camisoles with a built in bra you can use to sleep in to get you use to straps on your shoulder and a bra. I honestly don't know how I lived this long without camisoles they are so comfy. I saw some bras on sale so I got them which is totally optional I just couldn't resist. Make sure to research size conversion and measure yourself. Bones don't change but fat and other stuff does so you might or might not stay the same shape after a year so keep that in mind.

Makeup wise I'm lucky because my mom knows and she sales avon and jafra :P. I have an idea on what style I want. DIY clothes I found on pinterest and youtube match that style good. Don't give up you can make it work!

Thanks for your response, Olivia!

I managed to order some underwear and a camisole, just a little bit for now. hopefully, i got the right size and don't have to send it back in.  What do you recommend for free voice training?   anyone on youtube or some other place, or do you just practice on your own?  I've also done shaving, since i'm extremely hairy, and my hair is ever so slowly growing out.  though, it looks a bit off with my hairline already being far back.  darn genes screwed me on that.  deodorant will come next, once i've used up the stuff i currently have.  it is at least unscented, so nothing too manly about it.

thats interesting that you were in the military.  I tried that myself, actually.  just had some other medical issues come up, along with not wanting to be there in the first place.  long story there.  lets just say i didn't last in boot camp. My guys cloths are actually fairly worn out, since i haven't ever gone shopping for cloths myself, and i get hand me downs. trying to convert them would be very hard, since the fabric is almost no good anymore.

I have no idea where to even start with make up.  never tried it, nor have i seen anyone use it before. complete beginner with make up.   and i don't have a girl friend who knows about me, since i'm not out to anyone aside from my therapist.

I haven't tried make up yet either but like all women we have to start somewhere. I've been using this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.lilithwittmann.voicepitchanalyzer&hl=en on my tablet. I follow sarah n dipity, the dollhouse, Brooklyn beauty, caroland, Isley reust, aura andrews, and a few others. Sarah is close in age to me and her videos are informative and fun. I love them all it's just that I can relate to Sarah better. I didn't wait for my 2 pack of expensive dove men's deodorant ran out. As soon as the video suggested those things to me I went and got it. funny thing is it works better imo and smells better. Have you tried donating plasma? I would do that between jobs to stay sort of a float. easy 200 dollars a month. I've spent roughly 50 dollars so far getting clothes. it isn't too expensive just have to shop around. I got 4 push bras, 2 sports bras, 4 shorts yoga ones, 3 skirts, 2 pack deodorant, 3 babydolls, 8 camisoles, and an 7 pack of hanes microfiber bikini undies. I only go full time to sleep and it feels amazing like it was always meant to be. I do wear the bras to sleep to get use to them too. my only issue was shoes up until today. I finally found my size and at a reasonable price too. So those are next on my list as soon as I have more money.

I actually can't donate plasma, or blood.  while i have the right type for that, i can't physically.  My body can't take it.
