eu·gen·ics      /yuˈdʒɛnɪks/ Pronunciation Key - [yoo-jen-iks]

noun (used with a singular verb)
the study of or belief in the possibility of improving the qualities of the human species or a human population, esp. by such means as discouraging reproduction by persons having genetic defects or presumed to have inheritable undesirable traits (negative eugenics) or encouraging reproduction by persons presumed to have inheritable desirable traits (positive eugenics). from Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1)

which is to say, Bailey sees gays, gender variants and even IS as genetically defective. Eugenics is a really dangerous form of pseudo-science that was huge in the U.S. in the years prior to World War II, reached it's appalling apex in Nazi Germany, which isolated and killed large numbers of gays and other "degenerates" along with continental Jews.

where was eugenics primarily promulgated in its early years in the U.S.? you guessed it, in the universities.

You are so right, Ell.

Eugenics was practiced by the ancient Greeks.  They would leave an "imperfect" baby on a cliff for the birds to deal with.

The federal and state governments boosted eugenics through involuntary sterilization at mental health facilities for those whose conduct did not get them committed but did get a judge to sign the order for the sterilization.

The Canadians also practiced involuntary sterilizations.  In almost all cases it was women who were sterilized, sometimes subjects of lobotomies to curb their sexual propensities.

Yes scary, I completed a Semester of eugenics at Uni in sociology in the late 80's   At that stage I could not get my head around it, but enjoyed "Human Differences" as an elective from general studies.

it just makes me ill. but i think as long we start calling these "scientists" eugenicists - which is what they are - we may be able to nip the trend in the bud.

how dare they suggest that we are inferior, or that they are somehow superior?

everyone has strengths and weaknesses. while it is true that what happened to us may be slightly out of the fold, it doesn't mean that we have nothing to offer society. Look at the glorious blossoming of personality among so many of the members of this site alone. to me, it's truly beautiful, and quite beyond the ordinary. i have said it before and i will say it again: i am terribly impressed by so many of the people on this site, and am proud to say that i am acquainted with so many of you.

conversely, people like Bailey and Dreger seem to have been, themselves, really short-changed in the personality department. i think it should be noted for the record that their personalities are defective, just as many Nazi personalities were defective. which, i'd say, is more destructive to society, and far more difficult to correct than a mere gender, sexual orientation, or IS concern.
