Gender on Applications for School and Work

Okay, so I've recently had a big, rather abrupt move in my life and find myself starting over in many ways. Primary concerns right now are applying for a new job and applying for college again. The thing is... I just got my name legally changed (finally!) and now I find myself hesitating every time I fill out an application when I get to the gender section. My license, unfortunately, still has that blasted little F in the gender section. Given that I now have my male name, but am still legally female, what's the proper thing to put on these sorts of applications? Am I allowed to list my prefix as "Mister" on a college application? Will putting "male" on a job app cause problems? I'd certainly like to, but I fear the bureaucratic repercussions. Thoughts would be appreciated, and I apologize if this has been discussed already.

Oh, I now live in Virginia, by the way. I'm still rather oblivious to the LGBT laws around here.

I have had problems with putting male on my applications in the past, but I live in a less friendly state.  So now I always put my legal gender on a application. They are asking it for legal purposes anyways so I just give them what they want to know. But I have always had a unisex name so my case is a bit different. Some applications ask for a prefix some don't and you can put whatever you want on them. I know ciswomen that put sir as their prefix. I have put Mister or sir under prefix and no one ever mintioned it, so I don't think anyone pay attention to what you put as your prefix.

I would think that if the institution is not governmental you should be fine. Generally the gender you put on things such as applications doesn't really have to correspond to your legal gender

Ok, I've begun the job application process myself and the only place on the application asking about gender was the EEOC page. For the first time I selected "prefer not to answer". I don't know about local employers...mine went to Target and can't remember having to include gender anywhere other than the EEOC section. Maybe when I was a flight attendant, but I've applied so many places I can't tell them apart. Come interview time...this may be a different issue.

Though I'll be transitioning on the job, so who knows where I'll be in a month.

Just update your driver's license. I live in Virginia. It is easy to get your driver's license updated. Use this packet:

I think they may have made a slight alteration to the procedures after I updated mine, so call the DMV main office and check. They were very friendly when I called. In the mean time, mark that you're male. There is usually some time between applying and interviewing and actually filling out new hire paperwork. If you work on getting the license corrected now, you may not have to worry about disclosing.
