I live in Richmond, in an area that's some distance from most trans-friendly medical professionals. The easiest way for me to have access to hormones would be to access them through the Fan Free Clinic (
http://www.fanfreeclinic.org/), but they have financial eligibility requirements. I contacted their facility and was informed that in order to qualify for services, I need to:
be 18 or older {check},
live in Richmond {check},
make under 200% of the federal poverty line {check},
and not have any health insurance {this is where things get complicated}
Currently, I am registered under my parent's insurance, which does not cover anything gender-related anywhere. So staying on their health insurance policy doesn't help me with regards to transitioning, but it's also fairly important to have in case of any number of medical emergencies. Besides, my parents do not support me transitioning and have made it clear that they will sabotage my attempts to do so. Even if I tried transitioning on their insurance, they would find out and probably take issue with the situation.
To make matters worse, this is the only informed consent clinic in my area. If I try another option, it will certainly be more costly and more time consuming (I will need a mental health referral letter and therapy). What am I to do? I was just wondering if anyone here had some advice before I let the clinic know of my situation.
