Hey everyone,
So I am pretty sure I have basically everything to get started on my transition. I just spent $400 on clothes and am going to drop about $200 on makeup sometime hopefully this week. My therapist is great and after one session is willing to write my letter for HRT. I shave my legs once a week now and my face every three days. If i shave any more than that I'm a bit worried that it will start growing faster and thicker and will be more difficult to work with before I start HRT. After one more haircut I am now completely growing my hair out and am thinking about dying it to either a red or blonde after it gets to feminine lengths. I am also working on coming out to my guy friends and then eventually my parents. When I really focus on my voice it sounds somewhat feminine, although I cant do it for very long or else it hurts. I should also point out that its looking like I will get a job at amazon in the next few weeks and will have more than enough money for any other kind of procedure or really anything I need to start going full time.

I think this is a pretty good start at the moment and after I get my hormones I really want to go full time. However I do not know where or when to begin going full time. If anyone has any suggestions about what else I need to get started or when I should get started that would be great.

Starting full time is whenever it's best for you. Some people start long before they start HRT others, long after. In my case I set an approximate date which would allow a slow transition at work. My plans blew up when I was laid off months before that date, I needed a job and I would have had to get through probation on the new job before transitioning so instead I went full time before looking for a new job.

I suggest you start doing some part time which would help you become comfortable before setting a date. These trips could be by yourself or with a friend for support.

When I started to go full time I had already come out to friends and family years earlier. When deciding on transitioning I told them that I was beginning a full transition.

I was already gendered as female most of the time without attempting to be feminine, and it really took just some tweaking.

The biggest problem was makeup. I had a patchy beard that I could never get color corrected or concealed without my face looking like a clown.

Definitely wish I had started permanent hair removal earlier. With electrolysis its required to have some growth in order to target each hair.

Once I was cleared, and able to keep it there, makeup was a breeze.

I didn't go full time until this happened, but did start changing my wardrobe out, and dressing more feminine around friends and family. Everyone seemed to appreciate the heads up and time to get used to the idea rather than showing up presenting as full female without warning.

In the end it depends on where your starting point is, and how you want to deal with the social aspects. If you have very little beard and already on the passable side, go for it. If not consider practicing the skills (makeup, clothes, hair etc) before, and work on permanent hair removal.

Im not sure how well a few day old stubble will work for makeup- when I tried to cover that I always ended up with a cakey whiskery mess.

So how do I start going part time?
Pick a destination. It could be a park, a store or even a friends house and then dress properly for the event and make a day of it. In my case, I used my therapy group visits to become comfortable. After I lost my job, I went full time while I was waiting for job interviews so my trips out of the apartment were all as Dena. I still somewhat consider that as part time as much of my time was spent in my apartment but after finding a job, it was always full time.

I was wondering if you are conservative with your shaving schedule when it becomes time to get electrology your hair will still be growing out. As hair removal requires removing hair at the root. Ya gotta have roots. Or else you may be going for touch ups a lot more often than what you expect. And it does get expensive.

I second the part time thing, especially if you haven't had any facial hair removal yet. You do need to let it grow in a bit for each session and stubble is hard to hide without caking makeup on. Part time would allow that to continue while still making you a bit more comfortable, if you can.

For me, walking into the world was so scary that I did part time at home and support groups only. One day I had someone ask me what I was afraid of. That was the day I went full time and I was in no way mentally prepared for it. It still worked out, but a better part time experience probably would have been better.
