Just wanted to share that I'm going to be starting gender therapy (and hopefully hormones) soon, and am excited but also kind of nervous... what kinds of stuff do you do in gender therapy? I find some things online but not a whole lot. Thanks!!

Hi liamm,

Welcome to Susans and congrats on starting therapy! Although, I've never heard it be called "gender therapy." I'm guessing that means you're going to start seeing a therapist, ja? It should be a really good experience.

I wish all the best for you. I personally have been seeing a therapist for about a year now and I started hormones mid December of last year, and it's really put me at ease. Having any sort of therapist you can talk through problems with is incredibly good for your health.

I love how toes are called "feet fingers" in other languages.

liamm,

Congratulations. It is a great step on your path(however far that ends up going). It is really just therapy with a specialist and you may spend much time on defining your gender id then figuring out how to progress. Some times there are questions that are uncomfortable or challenging. My biggest suggestion is to be as honest as you can. It does not serve you or your therapist to lie or omit something because you are embarrassed by it. I remember being on the point of trembling(I was so nervous) for my first therapy appointment.

I also want to share some links with you. They are mostly welcome information and the rules that govern the site. If you have not had a chance to look through them, please take a moment:

Once again, welcome to Susan's. Look around, ask questions and join in.

Congratulations, you are making a big step on a long and exciting journey. Enjoy the ride.

You asked about gender therapy. Here is my two cents worth. I hear of two reasons for folks (us) going to gender therapy. The first is, we see it as an often required step in beginning hrt, a means to an end. The therapist, as used in this manner, just performs a gate keeper function. The second is, we need a skilled facilitator to aid us in working through the maze of understanding who we are and what we want and need. The therapist will achieve this by asking whatever questions necessary to get us to understand ourselves and our needs. This sounds both simple and obvious but that is not always the case. This second purpose of therapy requires finding a therapist that can understand our individual ways of thinking so that they can ask the kinds of questions that we can relate to in a manner we can actually hear. You may have to interview a few therapists to find one that can get you to think through the big stuff.

Many of us only want to get the hrt letter and believe that we know ourselves well enough to get by. Many of us realize that talking with someone to help us better understand why we are who we are and help us to make better decisions is a beneficial thing. I know that I was driven to just get the "letter" but along the way my wife and I got far more out of it that we expected.

Take it for what it is worth, Anne
