For years those seeking to transition from their birth gender to their appropriate gender had very few options in Oregon if they could not afford the high cost to have gender reassignment surgery. Recently this is changing, two doctors changed this by getting their program to allow OHSU hospital to perform reassignment surgery. Prior to this (and this is spelled out in the article) one surgeon who was bringing in over a million dollars in revenue each year to Oregon because of gender reassignment surgery would be constrained to only allowing a person undergoing the procedure to stay in the hospital for two nights and that is not enough. Sometimes the person going in for surgery having taken weeks off from work would arrive and be informed the surgery was postponed by the hospital because the hospital deemed the timeslot was better used for non-transgender people.

The surgeon in this article is the one who recently performed reassignment surgery on a person I assisted.

Completely article and it's a good read even if you are not in Oregon.
