Excellent hard SF writer.  The books can really get you thinking, which I quite enjoy.  I also enjoyed Ian Banks' work, particularly his "Culture" novels. 

And then there's Charles Stross.  His "Rule 34" (a sequel to "Halting State", but reads nicely on its own) is interesting from a couple points of view.  It is written in second person (There's a surprising reason for that...), and none of the characters are straight.   For light summer reading his 'fantasy' Merchant's War series is great (and turns some hoary old tropes on their head, as well as not being fantasy at all!), as is his "HP Lovecraft in the IT department" Laundry series.

yes they are quite epic he puts a new spin on the genre, i'll have to check those others out "rule 34 " sounds good

By the way, my actually favourite is Larry Niven. I'm completely in love with Ringworld saga and specially with the "Known Space" fictional universe <3

One book I loved in my youth was Robert Heinlein's "I Will Fear No Evil".  I was in high school, and had just completed 'being cured' of my little behavioral and medical problem with a series of testosterone shots.

In thinking about this, my reaction to the book probably indicates I wasn't really cured.

He was an influential writer on my life, with a variety of interesting social ideas expressed in his works.  Heh...

He was an influential writer on my life, with a variety of interesting social ideas expressed in his works.  Heh...

I think I've read "I Will Fear No Evil" 10 or so times.  I don't know why but a lot of trans people seemed to have an affinity for RAH.  Maybe it was the "mind your own business and I'll mind mine" attitude that seemed to run throughout his novels.  Heinlein and Asimov are by far my favorite authors and currently John Varley comes about as close to Heinlein as anyone ever has.  For those of you not familiar with Varley, there is a lot of gender theme in his books and short stories.  Also is everyone familiar with the Well World novels by Jack Chalker?  Again, some cross gender themes in those Chalker novels.
