I'm a bit surprised anyone ever tried this. Does seem like it would work.

It seems to be banned by the FDA

As I recall, there were problems with rejection (the body treats the implant like any other foreign object), infections (each implant penetrates the scalp, to the level of the galea, just above the pericranium that protects the skull bone), and 'hair' loss (something like 10-15% annually) requiring periodic replacement.

My personal transition path included medical changes.  The path others take may require no medical intervention, or different care.  We each find our own path. I provide these dates for the curious.

Frankly, between the cost of this, the need for return visits for scalp cleaning and repairs every 5-6 weeks, the long term damage to the scalp tissue and appearance, and the risk of infection even in the newest versions, I would not do this.

A safer alternative is one of the "hair replacement systems", where custom wig caps are molded to your skull and used to build a nice set of natural hair wigs, would be a far better option.  In these systems you also have to take your head in for 'service' every 6 weeks or so.  The wig cap is de-bonded from your scalp, the scalp is shaved and cleaned, and another of your caps is bonded to the scalp. The service center cleans the other wig while you go on your way.

Depending on how much you need, have you ever considered having your own hair harvested and implanted. I am on my second round of this. My surgeon wanted to do mine in two stages and the second stage is about a month away. First stage he re implanted about 1250 of my own hair follicles and will do about the same number again to thicken it up. I am not doing anything but letting it grow at the moment, I could style and cut it months ago but need a bit more length. The new implants will take about 6 months to gain some length and then I will be able to have my hair coloured and styled. Wiggs make me Dysphoric so I had to find another solution. It will be about $11500 to have my own hair back...it looks great already so its gonna look even better with the extra.

Happy to give you more info info you need it

Liz

PS I am wearing a wig in this photo

For ladies wanting to increase and speed up your hair growth, try biotin. Not in a capsule form but rather in a chewable "candy" which is absorbed by your body better. It resembles "star burst" candy.

The company that makes it is Neocell. I am not affiliated in any way with the company. I  have been trying to grow my natural hair for 2.5 years. It's a long process but well worth the wait....As the french say, "Bon Courage"!

wish i knew how to attach a photo here but am dumbfounded on how to do this since I can't attach it.  ???

Nina, you need to use an image hosting site and insert the image between image tags.  [img] [/img] . I use photobucket.

Very interesting!

I also concern about long-term hair loss.

That's one of the hair replacement systems I mentioned above.  They've got cap-like systems held by medical adhesives for the 'Freewear' system, and partial caps interlaced with your own hair for folks with relatively minor hair loss.  You go in periodically to have things spiffed up.

Markie they actually gave the strip they took from my hair a buzz cut, the length of hair has nothing to do with it. If you have no follicles on your head then stuff like regain won't help...it may well be worth getting an opinion from someone as to whether you have anything in the way of follicles to be stimulated...I have a desert...hence the implants. You may be pleasantly surprised...I look almost bald when the day I decided to transition and that was because I had a number 1 Razor Cut. As my hair has grown longer it is really clear that I have plenty of hair apart from but the horseshoe crown of balding (MPB)which only had minor amounts. Give yourself some time and you could be quietly surprised...don't forget looking down on the top of your head looks way worse than from frontal views that most people only ever see.

I am guessing that having fine hair means plenty of follicles to harvest...could really be worth that consult.

Good Luck

Liz

Thanks Liz i have a  fair amount of hair on the back of my head and  nape  ànd on the top towards my fore head its growing though sparse
I think i will investigate having  transplants done it would really make a difference in confidence  for me if i could have full coverage again
With a scalp advance i might just make it ....

I've studied dozens of hair loss solutions over the years and there seems to be an endless stream of outfits touting such gimmicks. Generally, any time you see the word "system" be ready to spend lots and lots of money. As for whether it's worth it or not, it's hard to say. The great advantage we have nowadays is the Internet. People who try these things share their experiences online so others can learn from their experiences. I wouldn't try anything that didn't have plenty of unconnected recommendations from users.

I'm beginning to experience enough hair loss that I will soon be doing something myself. I won't be using anyone's "system", though, being more the DIY type. I'm planning to initially combine a hairpiece known as a "topper" with a halo loop for fullness in the back. Eventually I'm sure I'll start wearing full wigs all time. The one advantage of hair loss, though, is that people with very little hair can fit or adhere their wigs and pieces very close to the scalp for a more convincing appearance. In fact, some of those hair "systems" actually shave an inch or so of your hair all around to adhere the edges of the wig. I'd like to put that option off awhile, though.

Looks dangerous and....well...dangerous. Here's a bunch of anecdotal negatives......

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3002411/

Any time you introduce anything to the body that is foreign to it, it spends an inordinate amount of energy and time to reject it or accept it. Manifesting in infection and organ faulure. Wigs still look like the choice and so many women have them, you have no idea what a large percentage of the female population actually wears them. Like rugs, you only notice the bad ones.

Like most things, this looks like it falls under the "if it looks to good to be true, it probably is"
