1 month post Srs FISTULA signs *help*

Hello everyone. 

I had SRS surgery in the UK 1 month ago. I researched the risks etc throughly, and i am very certain i have developed a fistula.

Gas escapes from my vagina after dilation, and feces is present at the end of the dilator (brown in colour and has a strong smell) i have rarely had bleeding or discharge after my SRS so i know it is not dried blood.

The symptoms are only present when i dilate, and bowel movements are normal. I am due to see my surgeon in one week and i am going to have my gp take a swab from my vagina to check for any bacteria found in feces.

Has anyone else experienced a fistula (RVF/ recto vaginal fistula)?
Will it heal by itself?
From my research, stretching the vagina will stretch the fistula, so should i dilate half an inch below my original 5" depth?

I hope someone can give me advice as i am very scared. thanks in advance.

Do they not give one those colon bags attached to ones tummy in an attempt to fix this ? I don't think that heals on its own ... I am guessing this is #NHS (and it's like two docs over there that now works with them right ? )

Hello, They will give the colon bag if it is a large fistula however i seem to have a very small fistula, and it is only symptomatic while dilating at the moment anyway..

That *could* be a fistula, and it's good that you're going to your doctor, because that's the only way to find out for sure.

However, air getting trapped in the vagina is normal and happens to cis women (you could Google "queef" for lots of stories like that) and it's totally possible to have dried blood that didn't work its way back out, so I wouldn't panic yet. Also, some fecal bacteria is normal in the vaginal area, particularly immediately post-op - there's no good bacteria established to prevent it, and the area is very near the anus.

You really need to check with your surgeon about dilation questions as well.

Thanks so much Jenna i am very certain it isn't air and is gas but i am yet to find out.

Will wait until next week, but wondered if anyone had anything similar happen to them.

I am just trying to douche after dilation to keep it sanitary.

It sounds pretty much like fistula, but you must check with your doctor to confirm it. There was a lady here who got small fistula, she was prescribed liquid diet for some time and the fistula resolved. So there are many ways for treating fistulas. I would suggest requesting an urgent appointment and seeing your doctor as soon as possible. The sooner it is discovered the greater the chances to treat it successfully.

Yes, only a month post op I guess you must be healed and that certainly sounds like a fistula. I agree getting an appointment earlier than a week out should be a priority!

Btw it is a rare complication but it can occur.

Chelsea I am sorry to hear this but fingers crossed and well done for the quick follow-up appointment. Can I ask where you went for the surgery? I'm quite likely to be offered full GRS under the NHS and will have the option to say where I'd like to go. However, having had my first stage SRS at PAI in Thailand, and being wowed by it, I'm so tempted to save up and have it done there. If you have anything more you can share about your surgery here that would be so useful to everyone, I'm sure. Hugs x

Yea I heard it was two one recent doc who is the replacement of Bellringer(who supposedly almost killed a few of the girls and some needing blood transfusions.... One thing great bout Bellringer who does the colovaginaplasty  )  ... I read it here or on ->-bleeped-<- ... Take it with a gran of salt tho....
And I am referring to the ones working with the NHS

Okay thanks Tina. If I'm offered GRC under the NHS it's likely to be either Dr Phil Thomas at Brighton or the Charing Cross hospital which I think is where Dr Bellringer worked?

I'm slightly hoping I can afford to go back to PAI but perhaps UK GRS girls can persuade me otherwise.

Are u sure it's feces? Sometimes you'll get brownish stain on your dilator or q tips from d mixture of sloughed off skin and lube or residue from lube from previous dilation or betadine... I am almost 11 yrs post op and I still get brownish stain on my dilator from dead skin cells mixed with lube....

Last month I assisted a male to female, one week after surgery she was passing gas through the vagina and was no dilating. Went to the hospital, they fixed the issue and was in recovery for nearly two weeks.

It will not heal, instead surgery is required.

Hhhmmmm I see ur name has Oregon in it ... Did she have her surgery in Portland ?
Hearing stuff like this kinda makes me want to stay in the states just in case something like that happens ...no idea if an American doctor would fix an overseas doc mishap

A botched surgery can happen outside or inside the country. This is why it's wise to stay near the hospital where you had the surgery for at least two weeks and then have a medical provider you can go to once home.

Personally, I stayed in California for one week in the hospital, one week in a hotel. Prior to this I had a specialist with transgender available to assist me if needed but never needed them.

In regards to where the botched surgery happened, here in Oregon.

A botched surgery can happen outside or inside the country. This is why it's wise to stay near the hospital where you had the surgery for at least two weeks and then have a medical provider you can go to once home.

Personally, I stayed in California for one week in the hospital, one week in a hotel. Prior to this I had a specialist with transgender available to assist me if needed but never needed them.

In regards to where the botched surgery happened, here in Oregon.

So Doctor dugi ? He is a newbie but accidents / mistakes / risks comes with every surgery

Yes Dugi performed the surgery. Things like this many times come from not having done the surgery enough times. I believe this was number 6.
