Why is Ear Ringing sound played most of the times in an intense part of a movie?

For example I was watching a shortfilm on Youtube and it was about depression. Well this girl self mutilated her wrists and it got all dark and played ear ringing sounds. I just wonder why they put that instead of some song?
Just wondering.. I think its pretty cool though

I've heard of this before somewhere. They do it in most films in order to make the audience feel uneasy and on edge.
They/them pronouns preferred.
