I don't get this "type to type" form of discrimination for performance/acting.    If they are a person that is able to portray the role the director and producer want portrayed in THEIR art, then there is no call to discriminate.

Or another way to look at it, if an actor or actress was trans, would it be ok to deny them opportunities to portray cis roles?  I don't think so.

If he does a cruddy job, then heckle him relentlessly for being a terrible actor.   I'd image that its a pretty terrifying role to pick up and run with, so easy to screw up and wreck your career forever.   You don't often get do-overs in that business.   Bring a loss to a producer as a result of poor portrayal?   Might as well go full time at Starbucks.

I wonder what is more important - who is the actor for a transgender role or that the topic of transgender is becoming more widely discussed and maybe even part of a new "normal" in movies and TV. Most of us strive for "normal".

At this point I prefer having trans being a topic at all over some odd pride who is acting. Would I prefer they would fill a transgender role with a transgender actor? Absolutely. However, showing the rest of the world that being trans is not some kind of kink or lifestyle choice is more important.

Now what I don't know yet is how the movie goes about it and if Matt Borner has the depth to fill this role. Guess we have to wait until it is released to judge.

Yeah - Will see watch it when it comes to the internet, but i agree they should have cast a transgender person for the role. There are many good ones.

It's another damn "transgender sex worker" role.  Granted, that's the character in the play, too, which just tells me that the entertainment industry, including playwrights, needs some real-life experience.  I don't know any transgender persons who spend their nights on street corners.  I know it happens, but some of us are doctors, and lawyers, and engineers.  Some of us are pilots, and some are mechanics.  Some of us are inventors, and some are artists.

I feel like men should stop being cast as trans women. If anything women instead should be playing those roles.

My position is those in charge of making the movie should choose the best person available for the role as they see fit.  If you don't like their choice don't watch the movie.

I have read a lot of articles on this.  At first, I thought who cares, it's just acting.  But I have come to see the other side of the argument too.

The issue is the societal narrative.  That is that transwomen are really men who want to dress up for nefarious purposes.  Casting him in that role reinforces this stereotype, particularly as it's in a sex worker role.

When the movie is all done and he is on stage receiving his award, what will people see?   A man who dressed up!

Vanessa Redgrave did play the role of Renée Richards in a made for TV movie Second Serve in 1986. I agree that more women should play most of these roles.
